Entrance Antiphon

Blest be God the Father, and the Only Begotten Son of God, and also the Holy Spirit: for he has shown us his merciful love.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 104

You are to be praised and highly exalted forever.
Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our fathers,
and to be praised and highly exalted forever;
and blessed is your glorious, holy name
and to be highly praised and highly exalted forever.
Blessed are you in the temple of your holy glory
and to be extolled and highly glorified forever.
Blessed are you upon the throne of your kingdom
and to be extolled and highly exalted forever.
Blessed are you, who sit upon cherubim
and look upon the deeps,
and to be praised and highly exalted forever.
Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven
and to be sung and glorified forever.
You are to be praised and highly exalted forever. /

Prayer for our Families

God of tender love and mercy,

thank you for the gift and blessing of Christian family life and all families.

We entrust our families to your constant care and protection.

Grant us wisdom to see how we can change our home life,

to become more like that of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

Teach us to listen to each other more attentively

and to be sensitive to each other’s needs.

Show us how to care for each other

and to share our time and all we have, generously.

Give us a spirit of patience and understanding.

Draw us together in deep bonds of
friendship, love and care for one another.

Comfort and strengthen us when we are wearied by trials and sorrows.

May the inspiration of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, be in our homes,

bringing light, warmth, unity, forgiveness and peace.

May we radiate the joy of Christian family life to all who come to our homes.

Bless our hearts and our homes now and always,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Solemnity of the Holy Trinity Year A
15 June 2014
Commentary Lionel Swain
First Reading (Ex 34:4-6, 8-9)
The setting of this scene is the renewal of Yahweh’s covenant with the Israelites, which they have broken by worshipping the golden calf (Ex 31:31-35). Yahweh’s name expresses his reality as one who is actively present, and who is essentially communicative. His self-proclamation as being ‘merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness’ indicates that his presence is essentially that of self-giving in love. He reveals himself here, as in Ex 3:1-22, as Saviour, only now wishing to redeem the Israelites not merely from the physical slavery of Egypt but from their infidelity.
Moses’ prayer for Yahweh to ‘go in the midst of us’ responds to this manifestation. It is a recognition that Yahweh is not only in the Sinai cloud, standing with Moses alone as mediator, but wills to be intimately with the whole people, forgiving and renewing his commitment. In praying in the plural Moses identifies himself with this people.
Gospel (Jn 3:16-18)
The context of this passage is the climax of Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus (Jn 3:1-21). Its perspective is that of the risen, glorified Jesus. He has just presented his death on the cross symbolically as his being exalted as the Son of Man (3:14-15). Now, referring to himself in the third person and evoking Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son, Isaac (Gen 22), he interprets this death as the culmination of God’s giving his only Son out of love for all humankind so that all may have eternal life.
Reception of eternal life is not automatic, but depends on each individual personally believing in Jesus, which is the unique criterion for being already saved, here and now. At the beginning of his meeting with Nicodemus (Jn 3:3-10) Jesus implied that to believe in him as the exalted Son of Man it is necessary to be re-born from above by the Spirit. By believing, in the Spirit, in Jesus as the only-begotten Son of God, a person receives eternal life which is the life of God.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

The Fatima SVDP is desperately in need of regular monthly income for their ongoing projects – Ottawa, Wylie House, Missionaries of Charity and St Theresa’s Children’s Home – their currently monthly commitments being approx R20 000 per month. The monthly parish collection, income from sales of second hand goods at Golden Hours and a few debit orders leaves them with a shortfall every month when a donation of R100 per month from 50% of our parishioners would bring in the necessary monthly funds to meet their obligations!

We encourage you to make the St Vincent de Paul Society your charity of choice by contributing to the collection for the poor on the First Sunday of every month or by depositing your contribution into their bank account:

Bank First National Bank

Branch Durban North

Branch Code 220426

An 18A Tax Certificate for all annual/monthly donations or debit orders: exceeding R500 can be supplied on request.

Sunday Mass and Holy Day Obligation

It is both a precept of the Church and Church law that Catholics must worship God on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation by participating in the Holy Mass. This follows from the fact that in the Mass it is Christ Himself who worships the Father, joining our worship to His. In no other way is it possible to adequately give thanks (eucharistia) to God for the blessings of creation, redemption and our sanctification than by uniting our offerings to that of Jesus Christ Himself.

Following the example of the Old Covenant the Church does this weekly, on Sundays, the day of the Lord’s Resurrection.

Canon 1247
On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass; they are also to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord's Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body.

Canon 1248
1. The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day.

The proper way to celebrate Sunday is spoken of at length in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

2182 Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. The faithful give witness by this to their communion in faith and charity. Together they testify to God's holiness and their hope of salvation. They strengthen one another under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

A day of grace and rest from work

2184 Just as God "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done," human life has a rhythm of work and rest. The institution of the Lord's Day helps everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives.

2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.
