Roy B. Sears Endowment for Student Internships
Summer 2011
The Sears Endowment for Student Internships is made possible by the generous gift from the estate of Roy B. Sears, ‘42. This endowment, along with additional funding provided by the Office of Career Development, has been established to assist students involved in an internship experience who might not otherwise be able to participate due to financial constraints. Students taking summer coursework will not be considered. Traditionally, stipends range from $500-$1200 per awarded student but may vary based on the discretion of the awards committee. The Office of Career Development and Hampden-SydneyCollege fully supports its students who engage in experiential learning activities through internships, volunteerism and job shadow opportunities.
Endowment Criteria
All undergraduate students are eligible to apply for a stipend, however preference will be given to juniors and those hailing from the state of West Virginia. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, a confirmed internship experience, and demonstrate some type of financial need. All awards will be based on the anticipated educational value of the proposed internship, the student’s self assessment and skill development, the variety of career paths submitted for approval, and the relative expenses tied directly to the internship including relocation costs, level of compensation during the internship, etc. All stipends will be paid prior to commencing the internship, and stipends are taxable.
Application Instructions
All application materials must be submitted in-personto the Office of Career Developmentby 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30thin Bagby 209. No late or incomplete application packets will be considered. To apply, submit the following materials:
1. a completed Sears Endowment for Student Internships application;
2.a completed Anticipated Cost of Attendance worksheet;
3.proof of employment from your internship site supervisor including your job/internship title, company name and employment dates;
4.a statement, not exceeding one-page, explaining your internship duties, theeducational benefit of the experience as it relates to your career plans, and the usefulness of receiving the stipend; and
5.a current resume.
Review and Award Process
An awards committee comprised of faculty, Career Development staff, alumni and one student will thoroughly review each application packet and conduct personal interviews with each applicant. Awards will be based on information presented at the time of the application and interview. All applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision approximately on April 11thvia their campus mailbox. Decisions will not be emailed.
Expectations of Recipients
Should you be awarded a summer stipend, you will be expected to complete several requirements that are outlined in detail below. Our office utilizes Blackboard and all pertinent information, related forms and submission dates will be housed here. Students who do not complete these requirements may have their stipends revoked.
- Internship Learning Contract
Each recipient will be required to complete a Learning Contract prior to the beginning of their internship experience. The purpose of this contract is to assist you in developing obtainable goals and objectives during your experience. You will also be asked to provide examples of how you plan to obtain these goals.
- Site Visit
Pending funding and the location of your internship, a member of the Career Development staff may visit during the summer. The purpose of this visit is to insure that you are having a positive and educational experience. The staff member will meet with you and your site supervisor,
learn about your experiences and assist with any questions or challenges that may arise. The Office of Career Development will contact you to schedule an appropriate date and time.
If a site visit is not doable, a conference call will be scheduled following the same outline.
- Contributing to Sears Summer Internships Blog
You will be required to make a minimum of 4 postings to the Sears Summer Internships Blog over the course of your experience. The blog, located at is an important forum for reflection, sharing, and your own personal brand. These postings allow you to share your experiences more immediately, add multimedia content, and share your experiences with the College community. Your minimum posting expectations should cover your first days on the job, discussing a challenging project and its outcome, situating the work of your organization in a larger context of its industry or geographic location, and summarizing what you’ve learned.
- Academic Year 2011-12Programming
Students who receive the Sears Endowment for this summer will be required to participate in programming during the 2011-12 academic year. The focus of this programming is to share your experiences with fellow H-SC men and encouraging them to pursue internships.
Final Evaluation
All recipients of the Sears Endowment will be required to complete the Final Evaluation that includes a
summary of your overall experience, specific examples of how you met your goals and objectives, and any
additional feedback you feel should be included. The evaluation will be due in August.
