We seek a Quartermaster to join a Charity whose purpose is to preserve a Heritage Asset.

Department

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT

Accountable to:The Executive Officer (XO) as the Departmental Manager.

Responsible to:- The Chief Bosun’s Mate as the Line Manager

-Under the functional authority of the Coordinating Quartermaster (CQM) when not designated as CQM.

-Under the functional authority of the Duty Manager when line manager is not onboard.

Responsible for:When employed as the Co-ordinating Quartermaster (CQM), the Quartermaster (QM) has delegated authority over the remainder of the QMs on the watch.

Overall Job purpose

To ensure the safety of the ship and its visitors

Primary Purpose:

  • To inform and look after the well-being, comfort and safety of visitors whilst the ship is open to the Public.
  • To man the Control Room when designated
  • To monitor the safety and security of the ship and her Staff, Contractors and Visitors
  • To carry out safety patrols

Secondary Purposes

  • Preparing the ship for visitors
  • To support the Chief Boatswains Mate (CBM)
  • To assist in rigging/de-rigging of equipment for Functions and Educational Events during normal working hours
  • To assist other departments when directed by the CBM.

Tasks:

Primary Tasks:

  • Provide a uniformed presence at point of entry, in the Control Room and below decks that visitors can approach for help and advice
  • Monitor the safety and comfort of visitors, ensuring they are not in danger from work in progress or endangering themselves by their own actions
  • Monitor ship’s installed CCTV system and Fire detection panel to give early warning of incidents/emergencies
  • Maintain control of staff/contractors muster boards
  • Control the issue of ship’s keys and maintain a control room logs
  • Act as Weekend Duty Visitor Host (role in development)

Secondary Tasks:

  • Cover / uncover equipment
  • Preparing and hoisting Signal Hoists and Ensigns
  • Cleaning of upper deck brightwork
  • Wash down decks and fittings as required
  • Replace lamps as required throughout the ship
  • To assist in the preparation and staffing of functions when required during normal shift patterns
  • Assist in cleaning tasks, post functions/events
  • Rig/de-rig equipment for Education activities and special events
  • Clean and maintain QM’s Mess, bathroom and heads
  • Assist CBM in the upkeep, general maintenance, cleaning and ship’s husbandry tasks when working out
  • Assist other departments when directed by CBM/CQM
  • Carry out the duties of a Night Ship-keeper when the permanent Ship-keepers are absent

Hours / Shift Pattern

  • 9 day shift pattern (6 days on, 3 days off) and to include breaks
  • Working year is 364 days (The ship is shut to visitors on Christmas Day)

Uniform

The job requires a Victorian Naval Uniform to be worn

Variation

The Trust reserves the right to vary or amend the duties and responsibilities of the post holder at any time according to the needs of the Trust’s business.

Essential Qualifications

  • Ability to be part of and at times manage a small team
  • Good communication skills
  • Good presentation and attention to detail.
  • Adaptable
  • Ability to access all parts of the ship
  • Ability to undertake manual work
  • Need to be MOD security cleared

Desirable Qualifications

  • Service background
  • Knowledge of security aspects
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements
  • Knowledge of fire-fighting
  • First Aid qualification
  • Clean driving licence

Remuneration Package

  • Salary £20,275 pa
  • Holidays , 29 days (including Bank holidays)
  • Pension arrangements
  • Death in Service benefit
