Rotarywelcomes yourinterestin hostingasecondaryschoolexchangestudent.Thisis auniqueopportunityfor yourfamilytoexperiencefirst-handtherichnessanddiversityofadifferentculture.Studentsareexpectedto becomeparticipatingmembersofthehostfamily.Theyarerequiredtoattenda localsecondaryschoolarrangedby Rotary.Attimestherewillbesomecommitmentsto attendtheirhostRotaryClubandotherRotaryactivities.

Asexchangesarereciprocalso as toselecta localstudenttoparticipateintheprogramwerequirefamiliestohost aninboundstudent.Thestudent’sexchangeis alwaysduringtheirhomeschoolyear.Becauseof thisvariation

from theAustralianschoolyeartheinboundexchangecommencesfrom July.Thetotalhosting periodto becoveredis typicallyaround52weeks.Thehostingperiodis foraperiodof 12 to16weeksandis flexiblebothindurationandtimingtobemutuallyagreeabletothosehostfamiliesinvolvedforeachstudent.

Thehostfamilyandoftentheextendedfamilyplaysan integralrole inofferingthestudenttheexperienceof anew cultureand language,whilstatthesametimelearningaboutadifferentculturefromthestudent.

Whattypeoffamiliesaretypicalhostsforexchangestudents?

•Familieswithsmallchildrenmakegreathostfamiliesbecause youngchildrengettheexperienceof having a bigbrotherorsisterandtheexchangestudentsoftenenjoytherelaxedatmosphereof practicingtheir languageskillswithayoungerchild.

•Familieswithhighschoolagechildrenare idealbecausehostbrothersandsisterscanquicklygetthe studentinvolvedinschoolandcommunityactivities.

•Retiredcouplesaregoodtoobecausetheycanhavemoretimetospend withtheirstudentthanyounger parentsdoandtheyoftenenjoyhavingayoungpersonaroundthehouse.

WhatmakeshostingaRotaryExchangeStudentagoodchoice?

Rotaryinsiststhatstudentshaveagoodacademicstandard,somespokenEnglishaswellasanabilitytoact asanambassadorforRotary,themselvesandtheirnationalcountry.Allstudentswillreceiveanorientation program,whichpreparesthemfortheiryearof exchangebothpriortodepartureandafterarrival.Thistraining is providedin areasofpublicspeaking,understandingculturaldifferences,gettingonwithpeople,etc.

TheRotarysupportnetworkof Clubs,StudentCounsellorsandtheDistrictYouthExchangeCommitteeprovide closecontactandateam supportstructuresecondto nonein studentexchangeprograms.Eachparticipating Clubisyourfirstcontactandsubsequentfollowupforthemanyaspectsoftheprogram.
