Summer Institute Abstract Form

Dear Scholar:

Congratulations on being accepted to the McNair Scholars Program.

In order to begin focusing on a research topic for your summer research work, research paper and future conference presentation, it is important to begin thinking in terms of the required format for writing research papers. An abstract is a brief summary of your research topic which includes:

  • The hypotheses tested
  • Information about the authors
  • A brief description of the methods used
  • The conclusions obtained

Abstracts allow one to quickly preview academic publications, and also facilitate archiving of papers. When you participate in a conference your abstract is published as part of the conference proceedings.

In the following pages a description of how to create an abstract is provided followed by a final sheet indicating that your mentor has reviewed your abstract and has approved your abstract. The abstract for the Hunter College McNair Summer Institute should be a brief description of your summer project and will only be preliminary. As your work progresses during the summer, your abstract will change to include data and findings. Working with your mentor on your research topic will be an on-going process and your research topic will change over time. Please note that this abstract format will be a standard in all conferences that you participate in and will be required by the program for conferences that you attend.
