VECTOR PROBLEMS

NAME: ______

Two pilots, Reginald and Esmeralda, sit in their respective airplanes at a small airstrip on the plains of Nebraska. Esmeralda owns a lovely egg-shell blue, single engine Cesena with a top speed of 275 mph. Reginald, the daredevil that he is, flies a bright red, twin-engine Beechcraft with a top speed of 350 mph. They are both planning on flying up to the buzzing metropolis of Bismarck, ND for an evening of fun and frivolity. The trip is 450 miles due north of their current location. Esmeralda, always the cautious one, has checked the weather report and has learned that the jet stream is blowing east at a brisk 160 mph. Just as they are both about to take off, Reginald challenges Esmeralda to race to Bismarck. They take off at 5:37 PM, but Reginald flies due north while Esmeralda, having done her Physics, heads in a direction that she believes will take her resultant displacement due north.
