  2. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of emerging technology resources, including social networking and other electronic communications (e.g., desktop conferencing, mobile technology, listservs, blogs, virtual reality, online file sharing).

Overview/Annotation:
In this lesson, students are challenged with their role and responsibilities with emerging technologies.

How do we use online learning environments for personal and group learning?
What is the relationship of technology to cultural, social, economic, environmental, and political factors?
What is my relationship with technology?
In what ways will technology become increasingly more important in my life?

Procedures/Activities:
Note: Teacher preparation is needed and paramount to the lesson’s success. The teacher should review all Technology Resources for discussion with students.
  1. Bell Ringer: Students list in bullet or paragraph format 5 positive and 5 negative aspects of social media and what is their favorite social media to use? This Bell Ringer is to be submitted as an assignment and stored in their Edmodo Backpack, Moodle, Google Docs and or a flash drive.
  2. Class discussion: The teacher should review Teacher Information #1 fromGCF LearnFree Blog - Digital vs Face-to-Face Conversations. Divide the class into manageable groups. Instruct each group to discuss how technology has changed the way they communicate with each other and how it has helped or harmed face-to-face communication.Each group selects someone in the group to summarize and share their group’s discussions to the class.
  3. Class discussion: Students pair-share to discuss how technologies have affectedsociety. Post pair-share, have students individually identify one technology they are familiar with and answer the question, how has this technology affected my life? Students share their answers with the class.
  4. Group Work: Divide students into four groups. Assign each group a topic or have them read one of the technology resources #4 - #8 as identified on the lesson plan. Group members will research or read about the trends, emergingtechnologies, and innovations predictedon their assigned topic or article.

  1. Class Discussion: Many individuals believe the primary reason for President Obama’s win in 2008 is because of his fondness of using technology. Have the students access the article on web site or provide them with copies of Handout #1. Once all students complete the article, discuss the importance of technology and politics.
  2. Quick write: Students write a paragraph on their predictions of future technology innovations.
  3. Show Edmodo for Social Networking. Teacher can adjust instruction to access FaceBook or other social networking site based on the school’s accessibility.
