DNA Biotechnology Paper

BACKGROUND: Chromosomes are threadlike structures within the nucleus of the cell that contain genetic information for the organism. They are a double helix molecule of nucleic acids called Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). The sequence of nitrogen bases in the DNA forms the genetic code. Through the Human Genome Project, we have successfully mapped the sequence of the nitrogen bases (A, T, G & C) in human DNA, increasing our knowledge of the genetic code and giving us the ability to control and manipulate chromosomes. This new biotechnology has many practical uses for our local and global communities. You will choose a type of DNA biotechnology to research, detailing its development and uses. Also you will identify any positive and negative impacts this new technology has created. Lastly you will detail how this biotechnology has affected our local and/or global community though 2 different areas (moral/ethical, social, economic, political, cultural and environmenta).

TASK: Your research paper must answer the following questions/statement:

A.  What is the application you are researching? See the list for help.

B.  What is the biotechnology that addresses this application? See the list for help.

C.  Describe the technology, how it is used to address your application, and the reasons this technology was developed.

D.  How effective has this biotechnology been in solving this application?

E.  Evaluate in detail the pros and cons of the use of this technology.

F.  Explain using details how your biotechnology topic will affect local or global community in at least two of the following areas: ______moral/ethical, _____social, _____economic, _____political, ______cultural, ______environmental.

G.  Cite your sources in MLA format in an annotated bibliography and using in-text notes. Plagiarism is unacceptable: no cutting and pasting!
