Goals: Provide a well-rounded musical education through vocal practice and performance with respects to the Illinois State Standards. Establish high standards and expectations for ourselves as musicians, students, leaders, and citizens. Learn, analyze, and perform upper level literature with exceptional preparation and skill abilities.
Expectations:
· Use Common Sense
o Respect your classmates, their property, and the classroom
o Do not touch any instrument that is not yours (especially the percussion)
o Everyone is included and treated with dignity and respect
· Be a Good Student
o Arrive to class on time, prepared with all materials, and ready to rehearse
§ If you are on time, you are late. If you are early, you are on time
o Listen attentively to instruction while the director is talking
o Absolutely no gum, food, or drink (other than water) allowed in the music room
o Practice the way you perform, perform the way you practiced
o Stay musically active and/or productive in class
§ You are either playing/singing or thinking about playing/singing
· Be a Good Citizen
o Do what is necessary to help further the productivity and quality of the program
§ Anyone can find problems, but leaders can fix them
o Establish a positive, uplifting, and safe environment
o Stay active in your class, school, and community
Grading Policy: Your grade is not given to you; it is earned. Your effort to the program earns you your grade.

· Attendance at Concerts and other Required Performances – 30%
· Written/Playing Quizzes and/or Assignments – 10%

Concerts and other Required Performances: All scheduled performances are required for everyone with very few exceptions. Any unexcused absence will result in a 0 grade for that performance. Any planned absences such as family vacations must be brought to the director 30 days before the performance for the performance to be excused. If you become ill, notify the director as soon as possible. All excused absences must be made up by a written assignment determined by the director and submitted as a concert grade.
Personal Electronic Devices (PED’s): Cell phones, IPods, MP3 Players, or any other electronic devices will not be tolerated during rehearsals. If you find you are the type of person who is tempted to check your phone periodically during class, you may place your phone on my desk before the bell, and then pick it up after rehearsal. If you are caught using a PED, that PED will be confiscated and returned to either the student or his/her parent at the end of the day.
Performance Attire: Dress appropriately for all concerts. No flip flops, shorts, capris, tee shirts, short skirts, or jeans. Students are required to obey the school dress code when attending school events (short skirts, short tops, and/or bare shoulders are not allowed); if anyone shows up in inappropriate attire, they will be asked to leave to change before we perform. Concert grades will be lowered if a student arrives in inappropriate attire. Ladies may wear knee length or longer skirts or slacks and a black shirt with black shoes (mind you could be standing for a while). Gentlemen will wear black trousers, black collared dress shirt with black socks and shoes. All Marching Band performances will be performed with the entire marching uniforms with black socks and shoes.
