A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND REVEREND BOBBY L. SMITH OF HOPKINS, THE PASTOR OF ZION CANAAN BAPTIST CHURCH IN COLUMBIA, AS HE COMPLETES TEN BLESSED YEARS AS THE CHURCH’S SENIOR PASTOR.

Whereas, Reverend Bobby L. Smith has served as the senior pastor of Zion Canaan Baptist Church in Columbia since June of 1991; and

Whereas, under his leadership, Zion Canaan Baptist Church has prospered and grown. The church has started many outreach ministries: a ministry to the deaf and hearing impaired, to the unmarried, to the senior citizens, as well as a brotherhood ministry, an outreach and evangelical ministry, and Friday night prayer services; and

Whereas, during Reverend Smith’s pastorate, the church has revitalized its core. It has ordained four and licensed seven ministers and ordained nine deacons. The church has reestablished its midweek worship services and new members youth/adult orientation classes. The church sanctuary has been renovated and property obtained for a Christian Family Center and day care/after care program; and

Whereas, Reverend Bobby Smith has used his thirty-three years of ministering experience and his thirty-two years of counseling experience to put Zion Canaan Baptist Church on firm footing and to make it a strong positive force to bring faith and the Holy Spirit to its members and the community; and

Whereas, the service of Reverend Smith is enhanced by the support of his loving wife, Carolyn, their six children, and numerous grandchildren who all are the mainstay of his life; and

Whereas, on June 3, 2001, Pentecost Sunday, the Zion Canaan Baptist Church celebrates the tenth anniversary of the senior pastoral service of Reverend Bobby L. Smith and holds a tribute in his honor; and

Whereas, it is only fitting that the members of the General Assembly join in the tribute and express their appreciation to the excellent life’s work done by this dedicated South Carolinian. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate and commend Reverend Bobby L. Smith of Hopkins, the pastor of Zion Canaan Baptist Church in Columbia, as he completes ten blessed years as the church’s senior pastor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Bobby L. Smith.
