Installing Respondus

Note: Before installing Respondus, you will need to close any Word Processing programs including email applications like Microsoft Outlook.

To install Respondus:

  1. Email and request information about how to install Respondus.
  2. ITHELP will respond and add you to a Canvas Workgroup called DCIT2804_Respondus.
  3. Once you accept the invitation, enter the workgroup and click Modules. These modules contain all the information you need to download, install and configure the program.

  1. In the module called Respondus 4.0 Installation, download the file called “Respondus4Campus.exe”

  1. Double click the “Respondus4Campus.exe” in your downloads folder.
  2. The Respondus 4 Campus-Wide – InstallShield Wizard is displayed.
  3. Click Next to begin the installation process.

  1. Select the I accept the terms of the license agreement radio button.
  2. Then click Next.

  1. The default destination location to install Respondus is displayed. If desired, click Change to browse for an alternate location.
  2. Then click Next.

  1. The default location where Respondus projects will be stored is displayed. If desired, click Change to browse for an alternate location.
  2. Then click Next.

  1. Click Install.
  2. A question will be displayed prompting whether to install the Respondus Equation Editor.
  1. Click Yes.
  1. Select the Install radio button.
  2. Then click OK.
  1. Unselect the View Read Me checkbox.
  2. Click OK.
  1. Then click Finish.
  2. Double-click the Respondus 4.0 Campus-Wide icon on the Windows desktop.
  1. The Campus-wide License window is displayed.

Note: If you had Respondus 3.5 installed previously and did not uninstall it before you installed Respondus 4.0, you will not see the Campus-wide License window displayed. However, you will need to update your Installation Password. To update your Installation Password, from Respondus 4.0, from the File menu select Update License. The Campus-wide License window will then be displayed. Paste the new Installation Password provided by ITHELP in the Installation Password field.

  1. Enter ‘Clemson University’ in the Institution Name field.
  2. Enter ‘’ in the Local Support Contact(s) field.
  3. Then enter the Installation Password found in the workgroup module where you downloaded the installer.
  4. Click License.
  1. The Respondus Newsletter window is displayed. Click the Sign Up for e-Newsletter (opens browser) button to sign-up for the Respondus Update newsletter. This is optional, it is not required.
  2. Click Close to continue to Respondus.

Configuring Respondus

To configure Respondus to work in conjunction with the Clemson University Canvas server:

  1. Double-click the Respondus 4 Campus-Wide icon on the Windows desktop.
  2. The Choose CMS Personality window is displayed.
  1. Select Instructure Canvas from the available drop down menu.
  2. Then click OK.
  3. Respondus opens with the Start tab displayed.
  1. Click Open or Create to open an existing or create a new respondus file.
  2. Click the Preview & Publish tab.
  1. In the menu to the left side of the window, select Publish to Canvas.
  2. Click Publish Wizard.
  1. From the Canvas Server drop down menu select ‘–add new server–’.
  1. Select the No, I want to enter the server settings manually radio button.
  2. Then click Next.
  3. The Canvas Server and Course window are displayed.
  1. In your web browser, navigate to any Canvas course which you have instructor rights to.
  2. Copy the URL and paste it into the box for step 2.
  3. Press Extract.
  4. Enter a Description for the server connection.
  5. Then enter your Canvas User name and Password.
  6. Click OK. The system displays the Update Settings page with the new server information populated in the Canvas Server drop down list.
  7. Click Next and you will be directed to your Canvas course through Respondus.
  1. Click Yes to any script errors that appear
  2. Sign into Canvas using your Clemson username and password
