A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEMORATE THE SECOND ANNUAL SWEETGRASS CULTURAL ARTS FESTIVAL TO BE HELD ON JUNE 2 AND 3, 2006, AS PART OF THE PICCOLO SPOLETO CELEBRATION AND TO WISH ITS ORGANIZERS EVERY SUCCESS.

Whereas, the second annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival will be held on June 2 and 3, 2006, on the grounds of Laing Middle School in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; and

Whereas, the festival provides an opportunity for local sweetgrass basket makers to showcase their exceptional artistry, conduct demonstrations, and host workshops for the large public attendance; and

Whereas, festival participants enjoy a variety of Gullah Geechee skits, storytelling, gospel songs, and children’s activities, and sample an assortment of Lowcountry Gullah foods; and

Whereas, the primary purpose of the celebration is to bring attention to the declining ancient African tradition and to preserve the existence of the sweetgrass basket art form that has become such a part of South Carolina culture; and

Whereas, the Honorable Congressman James Clyburn will again serve as the Honorary Chairperson for the event, and the festival will end with the muchanticipated performance of the Luther Barnes Song Ministries at the Wando High School auditorium on June 3, 2006; and

Whereas, the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival is fortunate to have numerous national, state, and local sponsors that serve as hosts to this event that recognizes the sweetgrass basket, the State of South Carolina’s official lowcountry handcraft; and

Whereas, the General Assembly commends the festival organizers for bringing such an important, enjoyable event to South Carolina and encourages all South Carolinians to attend. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commemorate the second annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival to be held on June 2 and 3, 2006, as part of the Piccolo Spoleto Celebration and wish its organizers every success.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Thomasena StokesMarshall, Project Director of the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival.
