Course Syllabus: Chemistry of Materials

I. Course Title: Chemistry IDepartment: Science

IV. Course Description:In Chemistry of Materials, the students will learn the fundamental principles of the structure and properties of materials and the relationships between structure and electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. The students will learn about metals, ceramics, multiphase systems, and polymeric materials.

V. Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to…

  • Apply general chemical principles;
  • Further develop problem-solving skills
  • Compare and analyze metals, ceramics, multiphase systems, and polymers
  • Describe crystal structures and physical properties of metals and how metals are claimed from their ores.
  • Discuss the mechanical properties of metals and the effects of heat-treating.
  • Discuss alloys and alloying techniques and analyze phase diagrams.
  • Recognize that most ceramics are crystalline solids that have properties related to the ionic or covalent bonds that hold them together.
  • Compare the classification of polymers and how they are altered chemically or with additives.
  • Describe and categorize types of composites and understand strength-to-weight ratios.

VI. Grading:Per district policy seventy percent (70%) of the student’s grade will be derived from summative assessments and thirty percent (30%) of the student’s grade will be derived from practice. A variety of assessment and practice methods will be utilized throughout the year.

*Powerschool will be updated on a weekly basis. Under normal circumstances you may expect grades/scores to be posted by Friday of each week.

VII. Classroom Behavior

  1. The student should be prepared for each class meeting by completing outside reading, assignments, or by reviewing class notes.
  2. The student should be present for all class meetings.
  3. The WHS homework policy will be followed and enforced.
  4. The WHS absent work policy will be followed an enforced.

Exception: Labs must be made up with in two weeks due to the sharing of equipment, perishable chemicals, and materials between the chemistry teachers.

  1. Students are expected to act in a mature manner at all times. Classroom misconduct that interferes with learning and teaching will not be tolerated.
  2. Laboratory misconduct jeopardizes the safety of students and the teacher. If laboratory misconduct occurs, the offending student will not be allowed to complete the lab during class. The lab may be completed before or after school per teacher/parent scheduling. Office referrals will be issued when warranted.
  3. The WHS academic dishonestypolicy will be followed and enforced in instances of cheating and/or plagiarism.
  4. Electronic devises should not be on and/or visible in this classroom.
  5. All district and building policies will be enforced in this classroom
