imgsrc= Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start producing watches until 1894. Its first chosen name was the “Columbian Watch Co.” but this had already been copyrighted by the Waterbury Company. The name Hamilton was then chosen - a tribute to Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the town’s growth.
By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant (convertible) watch and, following the USA’s entry into WWI, a small line of military style wire lug trench watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s BOONE model from the firm, a Coin edge 14kt Yellow Gold filled model that was first introduced in 1936 (this particular example dates to 1938, as per its serial number). I can only thing of one other American watch that had such “reeded” case sides, that being a Lord Elgin from about a year or two later.
Triple-signed for Hamilton, its case measures 38mm end to end and 22mm in width (22.5mm with recessed winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-1/2” long by 7/8” wide, not counting the crown. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, manual wind mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, butler finish enamel dial is in excellent condition – professionally restored to its correct original status. It features a 60 minute outer track border, applied 18kt Solid Gold numerals, original Spade-style gold metal hands and a rectangular-formseconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ original seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent condition and clear. The rectangular, Tank form case is 14 Karat Yellow Gold Filled and in excellent PLUS condition with absolutely NO wear whatsoever. Note the fancy COIN EDGE case sides – these are what make this watch so unique. The winding crown (correctly unmarked for era and appearing original) is a matching yellow gold-finished and in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent condition with no wear or engravings. It is stamped 14K Gold Filled. Peeking inside I find a clean Seventeen jewel movement signed Hamilton Watch Co., 17 Jewels - [Grade] 980 with serial number G170,321 The inside of the case lid is stamped HAMILTON WATCH COMPANY - LANCASTER, PA., 14K GOLD FILLED – 199961.
This timepiece has been cleaned, oiled and regulated by my certified watchmaker to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 19mm black alligator (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold buckle. Founded in 1869, the International Watch Company of Schaffhausen, Switzerland has produced some of the finest (and I do mean finest) watches ever, on par with VacheronConstantin, Rolex orPatek Philippe in terms of the precision and caliber of its movements. Notable as the only watch making firm in German (North Eastern) Switzerland, it was founded by Florentine Ariosto Jones (1841-1916), an American citizen and Civil War veteran (13th Massachusetts Volunteers). Jones was indebted to both Henri Moser and Aaron Dennison (of Waltham fame) for getting his factory established and its watches are highly sought after today.
I am pleased to offer for sale this excellent and original condition men’s vintage IWC timepiece, an 18kt Solid Yellow Gold Tank form model that dates to ca 1966. This triple-signed watch is quite beautiful in person and I don’t feel my photos do its understated elegance justice.
The case on this timepiece measures 35mm from end to end and 27mm in width (28mm with winding crown). This works out to be 1-3/8 inches in length by about 1-1/8 of an inch wide, including the gold crown, a nice “mid” size for either a gentleman or a woman. It is powered by its original IWC Caliber 422manual wind mechanism that is in excellent condition, fully serviced by my watchmaker David just last week and keeping accurate time.
The 100% original champagne gold, brushed enamel finished dial is in flawless condition – guaranteed untouched since it left the IWC factory. It features applied gold hour markers and original gold Baton-style hands. SignedInternational Watch Co. Schaffhausen</i below the 12 and Swiss at the base of the dial.
The beveled edge, hardened acrylic crystal is excellent condition with no flaws. The two-piece case is fully signed IWC and crafted of 18 Karat Solid Yellow Gold. It is in excellent PLUS condition and features a ridged bezel. The goldfinished winding crown (unmarked) is in excellent order, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the 18k solid gold back lid is vacuum-seal in design and in excellent PLUS shape, retaining the original brushed satin finish it left the factory with. This case has four screws (one at each corner) that need removed to access the mechanism so I had my watchmaker David take the photos inside before closing up. The mechanism is signed INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO. – SWISS with caliber C.422 below the balance wheel and serial number #1,840,067 stamped on a lowerplate. This serial number corresponds to a ca 1966 production date. The inside of the case lid is is stamped with the Swiss 18k gold Goddess Minerva hallmark and also PROBUS IWC SCAFUSIA – INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO., SWISS - 18K, 0.750 -1700431 - 1310 (IWC case reference numbers are unique to themselves).
This fine timepiece has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted with a new 18mm deBeer Paris hand crafted lizard grain band with gold finished buckle. Folks, if you wish to have the best quality money can buy I suggest that you seriously consider this beautifully preserved IWC – buying a watch like this today would easily set you back about five to six thousand dollars.

imgsrc= Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start its watch production until March 1894, producing pocket watches mainly of railroad grade. By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant watch and by 1919 a small line of “wrist” watches were available, but for women only! Yes, Hamilton entered the men’s wristwatch market rather late, introducing their first non-military men’s watches in November 1922, a good 10 years after Illinois, Elgin and Waltham. Well, they quickly caught up with the other American firms, producing the highest-grade American watches ever made.
I am happy to offer for sale the following vintage Hamilton timepiece, a ladies 14kt Solid White Gold “Cocktail” model from the early 1960s that features a total of twenty (20) genuine diamonds of high clarity around the bezel. This watch is in ORIGINAL condition and comes complete with a fine wire mesh 10kt white RGP cord bracelet that nicely complements the watch.
Triple-signed for Hamilton, its petite case measures 26mm end to end and 13.5mm in width (15mm with winding crown). This converts to 1 inch in total length by 5/8 of an inch wide(with the crown) and with its bracelet the overall length is 7 inches. If you have a larger wrist I can include a black or silver cord strap of any length. It is powered by its original and high quality 17 jewel, Swiss made Hamilton mechanism, fully serviced just last week to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, brushed enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – untouched since it left the factory. It features applied black enamel (lacquered) hour markers and black lacquer finish silver steel hands.Signed HAMILTON below the12 with the company logo above the 6 and SWISS MADE stamped at the base.p>The original oval shape acrylic crystal is in excellent condition. The case is simply beautiful, a 1960s Retro Modern example crafted of 14 Karat Solid White Gold and featuringb20 Genuine Diamonds</b all securely set and of high clarity. The white gold finished (unmarked) winding crown is in great shape, winding and setting smoothly.p>Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent shape and has never been engraved. It is stamped 14K GOLD at one edge and at the opposite edge it is stamped “HAMILTON.” Peeking inside I find a clean barrel-form movement with fancy Geneva striping. It is signed Hamilton – Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 612, Swiss HYL. The inside of the case back is stamped HAMILTON W. CO., LANCASTER, PA – 14K GOLD, L&W .
This lovely timepiece has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted an attractive and vintage 10kt white rolled gold plated mesh cord bracelet. Well then, who is going to be the new owner of this beautiful, diamond encrusted mid century Hamilton? Vintage watches are great as they are a solid investment but also fun to wear – they state your interest in things old and of a time gone by.p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
