TheGippslandLakesCoastalParkisanarrowcoastalreservecovering17,600hectaresalongaportion oftheNinetyMileBeach,fromSeaspraytoLakesEntrance. Thisuniqueandpicturesqueparkconsists oflakes,wetlands,marineandterrestrialenvironmentsand offersvisitorsawiderangeof recreational opportunities.TheparkalsoincludestheinternationallysignificantLakeReeveandBungaArm,several islandsandthe BoolePoolePeninsula.

Location andaccess

GippslandLakesCoastalParkislocated inEast Gippsland.The westernsectionofthepark is accessible byroadviaSeasprayand GoldenBeach.Theeastern section ofthe parkis accessible onlyby boat.

Welcometo Country

On Friday22October2010both theFederaland Stategovernmentsformallyrecognisedthe Gunaikurnai people astheTraditionalOwners ofover 20per cent ofpublic land withinGippslandand EasternVictoria.TheVictorianGovernment andthe Gunaikurnaipeopleformallysigned Victoria's first settlementagreementunder the newTraditional OwnerSettlementAct 2010. Thisagreement

involvedthetransfer of tenparks andreservestothe

Gunaikurnaias "AboriginalTitle" which will bejointly managedinconjunction withParks Victoria.

GippslandLakesCoastalParkis oneofthejointly managedparkswithinGippsland.Thisagreement recognisesthefactthattheGunaikurnaipeoplehave always beenconnectedtotheirland and arethe rightful peoplewhospeakforthat Country. These parks andreservesareculturallandscapes whichare part ofourlivingculture.

Camping

Designatedcampsitesaresituatedbetween Paradise BeachandTheHoneysuckles alongShoreline Driveat Golden Beach. Boatbasedbushcampsitesareavailable at BungaArm east of SteamerLanding. Bush campsites areavailableat Red Bluff and Spoon Bay.

Picnicking

Therearemanypicnicareasthroughoutthepark. Toilets, water, picnictables andfireplaces are provided atsomesites, withBBQs availableatNyerimilang HeritagePark. Drinking waterandfirewoodare NOT

alwaysavailable- weadvise youtocarryyour ownsupply.

Swimming

Thereareswimmingsitesalongtheshelteredlake shores.Takegreatcare whenswimming alongthe NinetyMile Beach.It is recommended thatswimmingbe contained withinflaggedareaspatrolledbysurflife savingclubs.

Fishing

Surffishing alongNinetyMileBeach,or lakefishingfrom aboat,bankorjettyis popularthroughout thepark. Bream,Flathead,SkipJack,LuderickandMullet arethe mainfishcaught.Pleasenotethatarecreationalfishing licenceis requiredfor allcoastalandinland waters.

Boating

TheLakes offer excellentopportunitiesforboating and waterskiingindesignated areas.Boat rampsare situatedatSeacombe,WattlePoint,Paynesville, Metung, Nungurner, LochSportandLakesEntrance. Jettiesfor accesstotheparkare providedat Barrier Landing, DrewsJetty, OceanGrange, Silver Shot LandingandSteamer Landing.Boatoperators are encouragedto usethesewagepumpor hopper facilities situatedaround thelakesfordisposalof sewage.

Horseriding

Horseridingis permittedalongformedtracks withinthe park west of Loch Sport.Horseridingisnotpermitted elsewhereintheparkincludingtheNinetyMileBeach. Beachridingispermitted nearbytheNinety MileBeach MarineNationalParkwestofSeaspray.

Hunting

Licensedhunting of gameduck,StubbleQuail andHog Deeris onlypermittedinaccordance withhunting regulations duringthe designatedgameseasons andin the nominatedareasfor each ofthesespecies.Hunting is not permittedonprivate property without permission fromthelandowner. Firearmsarenot permitted within the parkoutsideofthenominatedgameseasons.

Walking

Management tracksareclosedtoprivatevehicles, enablingeasy access forwalkerstoexplorethemore secludedareas of the park.

Dogs

In theGippslandLakesCoastalParkdogs are only permitted(on a leash atalltimes)atthefollowing locations:Barrier Landing (300meast ofthe jetty), Ocean Grange (within 100mofthe residentialzone),Paradise Beach, LochSport Causeway,Flamingo Beach,The HoneysucklesandGoldenBeach(between campsites one tosixon Shoreline Drive) and theNyerimilangHeritage Parkhomestead precinct.

Dogsare NOTpermitted inother areasofthe parknor between campsitesseventotwenty along Shoreline Drive, Golden Beach.Dogsare alsoNOTpermitted onboatsor on land inBungaArm. Ownersare required toclean up their dog’slitter. Dogs usedfortheflushing or retrievalof gamebirds are permittedin thehunting zonesofthe park, during and 24 hourspriortothecommencement ofthe open season.

Rich in plants and animals

The diverse range of plant habitatswithinthe park enables plenty ofopportunityfor viewing a wide range ofwildlife includingEastern GreyKangaroos,BlackWallabies and the CommonBrush-tailedand Ring-tailed Possums. Ninety Mile Beach isagood placeto observeshore and ocean birdssuch asshearwaters.

Frompastto present

The GippslandLakesfallwithin the boundariesofthe Tatungaloongclan oftheGunaikurnaipeople.There is much evidence oftheirtraditionallife innumerousmiddensitescontainingshellfishremains,charcoalandburnt pebbles,somedatingback3000 years.Formore informationaboutthe localAboriginalhistorycontactthe Krowathunkoolong KeepingPlacein Bairnsdaleon 03 5152 1891.

The firstEuropean recordsoftheGippslandLakeswere by AngusMcMillan in1840 and ofthe seaward entranceto the lakes byJohnReeve in 1842.The wreckoftheship, The Trinculo,which wasbeached in 1858 isstillevident todaywestof DelrayBeach.

Barrier Landing& Entrance Bay

The entrancetothe GippslandLakeswasconstructedin the 1880s.Beforethattime,the lakeswere generally closedtothesea,with thebarrier being breached only on rare occasions.

The originalconstruction involvedwooden breakwaters

extending a shortdistance outto sea,andsome ofthe old construction equipmentcanstillbeseen.

Take awalkacross theocean beachto TheEntrancefor

somefishing,watch theboatscome in orspotsomeseals or dolphinssearchingforfood.Water skiingisalso permittedbetween EntranceBayand theBarrier Landing. Pleaseobserve theregulationsigns.

Barrier Landing and EntranceBayfeature a number of rare shorebirdsincludingthe LittleTern,FairyTernand Hooded Plover which breed on Rigby Islandand onthe Ninety Mile Beach.Youcan enjoythese birdsfroma distance, butpleasekeep wellclear ofthemduringthe warmermonths, and where possible walkon thewetsand to avoid accidentallystepping on their nests.

Nyerimilang HeritagePark

NyerimilangHeritage Parkboastsmagnificentviewsand a rich varietyofplantandbirdlife.The highlightis NyerimilangHomestead,in a delightfulgardensetting on a clifftopabove the beautifulGippslandLakes.Perfect picnicspotsaresurrounded by gardenswith plantsfrom different environments,historicfarmbuildingsand pastoralsurrounds.Scenicwalksmeander alongbush and farmtracks, pastKurrajongtrees,wetland areas and through theEastGippslandIndigenousPlant Garden.

Accessto NyerimilangHeritage ParkisfromthePrinces Highwayvia the KalimnaWestRoad 10kmnorth-westof LakesEntrance.

homesteadisusually openfrom10:30amto 3pmon weekendsand 9:30amto 4pmonweekdays.

StepbackintimeatNyerimilang

The land thatis nowNyerimilangHeritage Parkwasa homestead,holiday home,BoysTraining Farmandcattle stud before being purchased bythe VictorianGovernment in 1976.Adisplayfeaturingthe history ofNyerimilangand the naturalresourcesand historyoftheGippslandLakes islocatedinsidethe homestead.

WalksaroundNyerimilang

WhistlingKite Track:750metres,10 minutesoneway.Thisshortwalkpassesthrough grasslandsanda variety offoresttypes.TheWhistling Kite,a large brown bird of preywith a distinctive underwing pattern and longtail, nestsinthetallBlueGumsnearby.

HomesteadTrack:1.1km,25 minutesoneway

The originalentranceto NyerimilangHomestead wasvia thistrackfromthe Maringa Creekcrossing.Thetrack gently descendsthrough gully vegetationtoswamplands and a saltmarsharea.

Cliff TopWalk: 1.7km, 30 minutesoneway Panoramicviewsofthe nearbylake systemand Bass Strait beyond canbe enjoyed on thiswalk.

KurrajongTrack:750metres, 10 minutesoneway.This

tracklinksCliffTop andHomestead Tracks.Kurrajongs and other nativetreescanbeseen atthe northern end of thistrack.

SaltMarshTrack:1.2km,25minutesoneway

FromKalimnaWestRoadto Reeve Channel;thesalt marsh environmentsurrounding Maringa Creekgivesway to thesandyshorelines ofthelakessystem.
