6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK :

6.1 Need for Study:

Now a days due to climatic changes and air pollution by which most people all over the world are suffering from respiratory disorder. As the nose is the gate way of respiratory system, it regulates the temperature, humidifies the inhaled air and one more important function it keeps out all impurities and harmfull particles being inhaled in to the body.

Pratishyaya is burning disease among all respiratory disorders. Pratishyaya by word itself indicates that it is recurrent attack and can participate due to minute etiological factors. Parthishaya is one of the disease which leads to immune compromised condition in its chronic phase. It is characterised by nasal blockage, nasal discharge, headache, continuous sneezing, heaviness in head etc. If it is not treated in time it leads to severe disorders like asthama, and other complicatory disorders of respiratory tract.

Nose is also considered as the gateway for head. In Ayurveda three types of treatment i.e. samshodhana, samshamana and nidana parivarjana are described for each & every disease. Among these the prime importance is given to shodhana followed by shamana. Pratishaya is well known for its recurrence and chronicity. Recurrence of the disease occurs when the vitiated doshas have not been evacuated completely. In such condition doshas resides in their latent stage and gives rise to some disease when they come in contact with aggravating factors. Nasya is the line of treatment for pratishyaya, along with this many preparation have been mentioned in the ayurvedic text for the treatment of pratishyaya.

In present study baladi taila nasya and chitraka hareetaki are mentioned in treatment of kaphaja pratishyaya. Hence an attempt will be made with such simple and effective measurers picked up from ayurvedic treatise nasya with Baladi taila1 and internal administration of Chitraka hareetaki2.

6.2 Review of Literature:

The term pratishyaya can be split into,”Prati”-is the prefix meaning abhimukha i.e. towards or in the direction of and “shyaya”-“pratisya gatwa”. It means moving or flowing. The combined word pratishyaya is explained in vigraha vakhya as “prati kshanam shyayate iti pratishyaya”. Continuous secretion from nose is known as pratishyaya3.

Vatadi dosha’s and rakta undergoes mild increase either separately or in combination and aggravated further by many exciting causes and gets localised in head, leads to pratishyaya4,5.

Kaphaja pratishyaya is one among the five types of pratishyaya, it is associated with cool whitish thick nosal discharge, heaviness in the head and mouth, oedema of eye, sever itching sensation in head, throat, palate and lips, cough etc6. Baladi Taila nasya is explained in Sushrutha Uttaradha. Chitraka harithaki preparation indicated in kaphaja pratishyaya which is mentioned in Bhaishajya ratnawalli, Yogaratnakara and Chakradatta.
