COURSE DESCRIPTION: Overview

Chemistry is the study of matter and its interactions. In this course, students will become familiar with the atomic structure, periodic properties of matter, chemical bonding, molecular geometry of organic and inorganic molecules, states of matter, stoichiometry, and properties of solutions. Students will further their problemsolving and laboratory skills in class work, homework, laboratory, and group collaboration.

Content Standards

All standards followed throughout this course are provided by Georgia Performance Standards and is available on their web-site at Once you have reached the homepage, click on Science then Chemistry Standards with Task.

Course Outline

Classifications of Matter / Characteristics of Science
Atomic Theory/Configuration / Records investigations clearly and accurately
Periodicity / Uses scientific tools
Bonding/Nomenclature / Interprets graphs, tables, and charts
Chemical Reactions / Writes clearly
Law of Conservation of Matter / Uses proper units
Empirical/Molecular Formulas / Organizes data into graphs, tables, and charts
Stoichiometry / Uses models
Kinetic Molecular Theory/Phase Changes / Asks quality questions
Gas Laws / Uses technology

Recognizes the importance of explaining data with precision and accuracy

Textbook

Textbook: Glencoe Chemistry Matter and Change

Notebooks:

Students will be required to maintain two notebooks, one for class and one for labs, throughout this course. Students will be graded on notebook maintenance according to the Notebook Rubric given at the beginning of the school year.

Materials:

  1. Notebook Paper
  2. Black pens & Pencils
  3. 5 dividers
  4. 1 ½ inch Three-ring binder
  5. Scientific Calculator

Format for Notebook:

Divider 1-Syllabus/ Notebook Check Form/ Standards

Divider 2-Instructional Strategies Sheet

Divider 3- Cornell Notes, study guides, and handouts

Divider 4- Homeworkand class work

Divider 5- Exit Tickets/ Focus Activities Bi-weekly Sheet

Rules

  • Follow all student handbook policies.
  • Be seated, quiet, and ready to work when the bell rings.
  • Follow directions the first time given---Laboratory procedures, daily work, and all safety rules must be adhered to, or grade points will be deducted.
  • Follow all written and oral directions.
  • Arrive to class on time with the appropriate materials and supplies.
  • Do not leave assigned seat and do not interfere with instruction time.
  • Be respectful at all times.

Consequences

  • Violation 1: Verbal or Written Warning
  • Violation 2: Student-Teacher Conference
  • Violation 3: Parent Contact/Detention
  • Violation 4: Parent/Student/Teacher Conference
  • Violation 5: Discipline Office Referral

Any step or steps can and will be skipped if the problem is habitual or causes severe disruption.

Rewards

  • Verbal/Written Praise – (I will also contact parents to notify them of good progress)
  • Bonus Points – distributed at the teacher’s discretion and added to category of teacher’s choice (homework, quizzes, test)

Detention Policy

In the event that a student receives detention, he or she must report to the teacher’s classroom immediately following the dismissal bell no later than 3:20 pm. Each detention will last 30 minutes unless otherwise noted by the teacher. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange his or her ride home, rides will NOT be provided by the teacher under any circumstances.

Absentee Make-Up Policy

If you are absent, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain all make-up work from the teacher on the day of his or her return. All absentee make-up work must be turned in within three school days of its issuance. After three school days, the Late Work Policy will take effect. This policy does not apply to suspensions if work was picked up during the suspension. All assignments given during suspensions are due upon your return to school and will take the place of any missed work.

Late/Make-up Work Policy

Any assignments turned in after the assignment’s due date is considered late. Students will be required to have a Make-up Contract signed by his/her parent or guardian returned will all late/make-up work attached. All late assignments will have 50% of the credit otherwise earned deducted for late assignments that are turned with a make-up contract attached. No late work will be accepted without a Make-up Contract attached.

General Policies

All papers must include the following information.

  • Name
  • Date
  • Period
  • Assignment Name

Academic Honesty:

  • Cheating is using someone else’s knowledge or work and say it is your own (also considered plagiarism).
  • All students caught cheating will receive a zero for that assignment.

Grades Based On: Grading Scale:

25% = TestsA = 90 – 100%

15% = QuizzesB = 80 – 89%

25% = Labs and ResearchProjectsC = 70 – 79%

20% = Class work/Homework/Class participationF = 0 – 69%

15% = Final Semester Exam

By signing below, you are agreeing to the policies and procedures outlined in the syllabus. You are stating that you understand these guidelines and that you will follow them as set forth to ensure a consistent and fair environment for each student in this class. You also understand you may ask any questions of me at any time in regards to this syllabus, or any other concern that you may have. These policies and procedures are highlighted here for your review. Please check each box prior to signing stating that you have read and agree to ensure that all requirements are met to meet the needs of each student.

I understand that the Materials section of this syllabus outlines all items my student will require for success in Chemistry.

I understand the Rules and Expectations of my child, and I will discuss the importance of these rules with my child to ensure his/her understanding.

I understand that there are Consequences set forth by this syllabus and that the implementation is based on the frequency and severity of the offense.

I understand the Absentee Make-up Policy as well as the Late/Make-up Work Policy. I also understand and will discuss with my child that the best method for avoiding penalties for late/make-up work is to turn ALL assignments on time.

I understand the Grade Distribution and that is designed to provide my child with the best opportunity to have high academic achievement this school year.

Finally, I will be as active as possible in ensuring that my student adheres to the policies set forth in this syllabus, HenryW.GradyHigh School, and AtlantaPublic Schools.
