Celebrating Major Anniversaries of British History: 2003
British Travel Trade Fair 26-27 March 2003 NEC Birmingham @ Raymond Lloyd
In this my third paper for the British Travel Trade Fair, after those for March 1999 and March 2000, I update two of my earlier anniversary lists. The first, set out overleaf, is that of some 40 British women whose 50- and 100-year anniversaries come up in 2003. They include the sculptor Barbara Hepworth, the aviator Amy Johnson and the writer Rosamund Lehmann. The purpose of such anniversary lists is to suggest deadlines for new studies of the women named, and even to promote visits to their place of birth or work.
My lists cover a 50-year cycle, every year to 2052, so that if the 50th anniversary of someone is missed in 2003, the opportunity for making good will occur on her 100th anniversary in 2053. The 50-year cycle, of some 5400 anniversaries of many kinds of distinguished women, may be emailed on request from my computer, or very preliminary lists for the next few years may be downloaded from my website, by clicking successively on Documents, Centenaries.
For the past 22 years my lists have been sent to central banks, to have distinguished women on history portrayed on banknotes and coins. Thus UK residents looking at the new £5 note will see the Quaker and social reformer Elizabeth Fry, whom I first proposed to the Bank of England in 1980 on the bicentenary of her birth, then in 1995 on the 150th anniversary of her death, and finally to bring out the note in 2002 on 21 May, the day Elizabeth was born in 1780. And by 10 October 2003, the Royal Mint will bring out a current 50 pence coin for the centenary of the Women's Social & Political Union, founded by Emmeline Pankhurst in Manchester in 1903. There is currently an exhibit of my "Women on Banknotes" in the Bank of England Museum in Threadneedle Street, on show to Thursday 27 March 2003.
My second list is that of 25 major anniversaries in British history coming up in 2003:
