Fall 2016 Placement Measures Methodology
Cohort Criteria
· IRO_BASE CENSUS freeze used as data source to identify cohort students
· First-time freshman or first-time at institution transfer student
· Must have at least one recorded placement measure for English or Math
· Must not have any post-secondary history (excluding audited courses) in subject for which student was evaluated for placement. Post-secondary history includes courses:
o Taken as early admissions student prior to entry into cohort
o Earned through advanced placement
o Earned through credit-by-exam
o Taken at or transferred from other post-secondary institutions
o Equivalent courses (Math placement only):
§ Math 100 and above
· BUS 100 (Kapiolani only)
· BUSN 189 (Maui only)
· CULN 100 (Maui only)
· PHIL 110 (all Community Colleges)
· QM 107C (Maui only)
§ Below Math 100
· PCM 23 (Kapiolani only)
· QM 75 (Leeward only)
· QM 78 (Leeward only)
Placement Criteria
· MST_TEST used as data source for placement measures.
· Highest recorded score in each placement measure was used to evaluate placement level.
· Highest evaluated placement level was recorded for each student.

Grades Criteria
For grades evaluation:
· IRO_REGS EOS freeze used as data source
· Student must appear in cohort
· Student must have an evaluated placement in the subject at time of entry into cohort
· Student must not have any post-secondary history in the subject at time of entry into cohort
· Student must have registered in at least one course in the subject at any UH institution for the semester evaluated
· Math includes math-equivalent courses
· Grade evaluated as:
o C or Better
§ Grade point value is greater than or equal to 2 or
§ Final grade is CR if taken as CR/NC
o D or Better: Grade point value is greater than or equal to 1
o Did not complete
§ Did not pass course with D or better
§ Withdrew from course with W grade or
§ Ended with incomplete grade (I)
o Did not register: no course records in subject in IRO_REGS.
