SUMMER IDEAS FOR YOUR “TO BE” 3RD GRADER

The most important things you can do this summer is to READ a little, write a little and practice math facts daily.

Math Suggestions:

*Practice addition and subtraction facts

*Check out Sumdog.com

*Review place value, time and money

*Practice measuring things around you

*Explore multiplication and division

*Go on a shape hunt where you look for plane shapes (circle, square, triangle, etc.)

and solid figures (cube, sphere, pyramid, etc.)

*Make story problems about your family or friends

*Make a board game using addition or subtraction

*Practice flashcards with a friend

*Add and subtract three-digit numbers

Language Arts Ideas:

*Keep writing. Maybe keep a journal of what you are doing each day, or about fun

places you have visited and fun things that you did.

*Practice using capitals, punctuation and spelling in your writing.

*Visit a library.

*Identify the characters, setting, problem and solution while reading.

*When reading non-fiction, identify the topic, main idea and details.

*Find a newspaper. Circle the nouns, verbs and adjectives in an article.

*Send a friendly letter to Mrs. Wylie.

*Write a sequel to your favorite book.

*Get together with a group of friends and act out a book. Put on a show for your

family.

*Google “Reader’s Theater.” Act out a play with family or friends.

*Retell your favorite story to a friend.

*Have breakfast and books in bed. What a great way to start the day!

*Play Scrabble. Great spelling fun!

Writing:

*Practice cursive writing

Social Studies Practice:

*Chart on a map all of the places you have been over summer vacation

*Learn the capitals of the 50 states

*Draw a map of your room or neighborhood

Science Fun:

*Record the phases of the moon over a month

*Record the weather and temperature for a month

*Research an animal and find out its diet, enemies and habitat

*Google a science experiment and try it at home
