Message from Mr. Morris

Dear Pleasant Hill Parents,
What a wonderful month of September we had!! The kick-off to the school year went very smooth as all of the students and staff began the 2014 school year! By the end of September we were finishing our Fall MAP testing for our students in second through sixth grade. Our primary grades have gathered data based on formative assessments in literacy and math. All of the data collected will help the teachers drive their instruction to meet all of the needs in the classroom.
As we look at October, we had a great turnout for our annual back to school bingo fundraiser on October 2nd for our students. This PTA sponsored event was very successful and it provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to have fun, be with their friends and enjoy the afternoon!
On October 8th Pleasant Hill participated in the Palatine Bike Club's, "Bike To School Day." This event encourages our students to live an active life style. Students who are not able to ride their bikes to school can do so after school at home. A note from a parent that states this is happening is all the student needs to bring back to school the next day to claim their prize.
The week of Oct. 20 our annual book fair will take place with our Family reading night being held on Oct. 23rd. More information will be coming out regarding those two events in the next week.
A reminder that if your email has changed since you registered your student for school, please contact the office to have this updated in our system. This will help when communications are sent out throughout the school year.
I want to extend a huge thank you to all the parents who have volunteered their time and energy to helping with our PTA events to start off the year. Without your help, these events would not be possible for our students and families.
I look forward to another great beginning to the school year and thank everyone for their support in continuing to make Pleasant Hill and excellent school!!
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call or email.
Thank you,
Mr. Morris

Pleasant Hill Birthday Book Club
Our PTA sponsors our Birthday Book Club each year. Students select a book from the collection of books provided by the PTA. This year our students purchased 152 books, which will be donated to our library after students have read them. Each student had their picture taken with their book, and all pictures are displayed just outside our resource center. Check out the colorful and creative bulletin board display of our Birthday Book Club participants. Come by any time of day, and see students checking out their pictures. A big thank you to Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. Siena for all their hard work with organizing and coordinating our Birthday Book Club. Thank you also to the Pleasant Hill PTA for continuing to sponsor our Birthday Book Club each year.

Just for Boys & Just for Girls Programs
For 5th and 6th Grade Students
Coming in November to Pleasant Hill
Have you ever wondered how you should start a conversation with your child about the change they will soon go through, or are currently going through? The Just for Boys and Just for Girls programs allow our 5th and 6th graders to learn about the changes they will experience during puberty. A presenter from the Robert Crown Center for Health Education will come to Pleasant Hill on the evening of Monday, November 3rd for our 5th and 6th grade boys. Pat Garrity, L.C.S.W. will present a program for our 5th and 6th grade girls on the evening of Thursday, November 6th. Both programs have been coming to Pleasant Hill for several years, with positive feedback from students and their parents. The "boys only" and "girls only" format encourages a fun and open discussion about questions that arise during the onset of puberty. The presenters will discuss the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty and also discuss the reproductive anatomy.
At the programs, students will:
  1. Increase knowledge about the human anatomy, the changes which occur during puberty, and the reasons for these changes.
  2. Understand that the changes are a normal part of human development and will increase their comfort for discussing this topic with trusted adults.
  3. Learn skills to take care of their bodies as they experience the changes during puberty.
Our 5th and 6th gradeBOYSshould come accompanied by their dad or adult male relative/friend onMonday, November 3rd, starting at 6:30 PM at the Pleasant Hill cafeteria.
Our 5th and 6th gradeGIRLSshould come accompanied by their mom or adult female relative/friend onThursday, November 6th starting at 6:30 PM in the Pleasant Hill cafeteria.
Please RSVP to Julie Blume by October 27 r 847-705-0669. Please feel free to contact if you have any questions.
Family Science Night
A note from the Family Science Night Committee:
Coming soon- Thursday, November 20, 6-8 pm. This is a free event for Pleasant Hill families.
A student's love of learning, curiosity about our world and empowerment to set great goals all begin with the interactions of that child with his or her parents. Our mission is to offer parents and their children an exciting, fun, and safe event that encourages them to explore science, technology, engineering and math concepts together.
See you all there!

Notes From Nauman
The school year is off to another great start and things are really getting busy in the music room. For up-to-date information about concerts, recorder resources and other happenings in the general music program at Pleasant Hill, please visit the website byclicking here.
A more detailed version of the monthly newsletter is on the website under the 'Newsletter' tab on the left.
The 5th and 6th graders have just started working on their musical called Summer Camp and a note will be sent home detailing information about the final performance on Wednesday, November 12th. Costume suggestions can be found on the music classroom website under the 'Resources & Favorite Links' tab on the left side of the page. There you will find pictures and descriptions of all the costumes to give you some ideas.
4th graders have been reviewing the notes on the music staff and have already completed testing for their first belt in recorder Karate. Music packets will be sent home this month for your child to practice. This is homework for music class and all practicing should be done at home. Class time will not be used to practice the songs so please make sure your child is playing his/her recorder for at least 5-10 minutes each day.
Please look on the website to find out more about what your child is doing in music class.
Thanks,
KeeleyNauman
D15 E-Flyers

District 15 has gone green in its approach to distributing community flyers. Rather than sending flyers home with students via backpack mail (which previously only took place at the elementary level), flyers are now posted on theD15 E-Flyerswebpage for all to view or print 24/7. A limited number of flyers may also available in the school's flyer rack for students or parents to pick up (if an organization chooses to provide them).
