Welcome to Algebra 1 at Malibu High! I am thrilled to be starting a new year and am certain that it will prove to be extremely rewarding. The following will outline some important information about the course. Please take this home, share with your parentsand sign and return the 2nd page. I look forward to a wonderful year!

The following items you only need to bring at the beginning of the year. These items will remain in class and will be used when necessary.
2 packages of 4 x 6 index cards- colored or white; ruled or un-ruled
(please do not bring the 3 x 5 size cards)
2 dry erase markers (low odor if possible)
4-AAA batteries
You should bring the following items daily:
1 bound composition book ONLY FOR MATH- this will remain in your binder but will be used daily
Pencils
Grading pen
Notebook and Graph Paper (no spirals)
MHS Planner
Daily Procedures:
Learn-Checks (Warm-ups on the TI Navigator System)
Go over homework and answer questions
Present lesson for the day- this part of the class may consist of study cards (note-taking), group work, projects, games, or other active learning experiences
Assign homework
***Classroom routine will vary on days of Quizzes, Tests or Projects. You should expect to have a Quiz every Friday unless otherwise notified.
Grading Policy:
45% Tests/Project
25% Quizzes
20% Homework/In-class Activities/Participation
10% Learn Checks/Warm-Ups
All work is due on the DUE DATE that is assigned. If it is one day late, the highest grade the work will receive is an 80%, 2 days late 70%, and work will not be accepted after that.
Homework will be stamped each day for completeness with work shown. On Fridays, you will turn in your homework packet for the week.
Quizzes may be correctedto receive a higher grade. The student can earn back half of the amount of points they missed (i.e. The original grade was a 60, but you rework the ones you missed, you can raise your grade to an 80). This process will be explained more thoroughly in class. Tests may not be corrected. You will be allowed to use your study cards on Quizzes but not on Tests.
Extra credit will be assigned through out the year. Please pay attention to the times it is offered and use them as needed.
Make-Up Work Policy:
**Assignments and homework will be on the calendar in the back of the classroom and in the make-up work folder, as well as posted on the school website at If the homework is a worksheet, you will have to complete it when you return. It is your responsibility to get what you need and see me if you have questions.
*You will have the number of days you are absent plus one to complete and turn in all assignments.
*If you are absent for a quiz, your next quiz will count twice.
*If you are absent for a Test, you will need to schedule a time with me to make it up.

Tutoring:
Tutoring will be offered on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 and during nutrition. Let me know if you are having trouble and we will find a way to get together and get you the extra help you need to succeed.
Honors Policy: This class is an Honors course and is also a required course for high school graduation. It is a rigorous course and will move swiftly. To continue on the Honors math path, you need to maintain A’s both semesters and earn teacher’s recommendation to move to Geometry Honors. If at any time your grade drops below an 80% and/or the student does not maintain work habits that are suitable for honors placement, the teacher has the discretion to recommend the student be moved to regular math.

I want you to enjoy math and leave my classroom with math skills as well as life long skills that you will use everyday.
