Checklist: Before You Begin Your Online or Hybrid Course

  1. Update your personal information in BanWeb. You can access the VTC database by going to Enter the secure area by using your 9-digit user ID and your password (your date of birth unless you have previously changed it). Select the Personal Information link and verify that your telephone number, address and other personal information are correct. Write down your Valdosta Tech Student Email Address. You must set up this email account (see #2).

  1. To set up your VTC student email account, go to Your initial student email password will be your BanWeb login PIN. Sign in using your new VTC email address and password. Provide the requested account information and change your password. Once you have completed all the fields on the account Information page and accepted the agreements, you will be prompted to sign into your student account again using your new password.
Initial correspondence for your online or hybrid course will be sent to you through your Valdosta Technical College email account. Check your email regularly! It is imperative that you set up your VTC email account so that you can receive information regarding classes, activities, important announcements, etc. For step-by-step directions, go to

  1. Review the Online Student Orientation located on the Valdosta Tech website, Online Learning link ( If you prefer, you may schedule a face-to-face orientation by calling 229.245.6554 or emailing Sally Dorminey ().

  1. Update your computer.
  2. To use ANGEL, the learning management system, you must have Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2.x. If you are unsure of which version of Internet Explorer you use, access the Internet; select the Help menu, then select About Internet Explorer.

  4. Change your settings. On your computer, go to
  5. Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Security > Use Pop Up Blocker > Disable
  6. Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites >type in Uncheck the “Require Server Verification (https:) for all sites in this zone” option.
  7. Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Security Tab > Custom Level > Scripting > Allow status bar updates via script > Enable.
  8. Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Browsing History.

  1. Take the READI Assessment. Taking a course online takes special skills, aptitude, and learning styles. To help you determine if online learning is a good option, log onto and take the 25-minute questionnaire. The results will not prohibit anyone from taking an online course; rather, the information can be used to identify areas that need improvement for success in an online course. Use the following username and password:

  1. Verify that you have the hardware and software requirements necessary for this course. Review the Software/Special Requirements column to the right of your course on this quarter’s Notice to Online/Hybrid Students to make sure that you have the correct hardware and software to begin your online or hybrid course.

  1. Log into ANGEL. The first day of Winter Quarter 2009 is January 7, 2009. On January 7, you will see your courses listed in the area labeled Courses. You will not be able to log into your course until the first day of the quarter. You can access a specific course by clicking on name of the course. Note: If you register late, it may take 24 hours for your account to be activated in your course.
