Daikin takes the next step with the launch of new

R-32 air to air heat pumps in Europe

Following the launch in 2013 of the UruruSarara, the first residential air to air heat pump range in Europe to use R-32 refrigerant, Daikin Europe has announced the extension of the range with the launch of two new wall-mounted series: thenew DaikinEmura and the Daikin FTXM.

As a market leader, Daikin’s focus is on designingindoor comfort solutions that have a lower environmental impact, with energy efficiency and refrigerant choice key parameters.

With this goal in mind, Daikin launched the first air conditioners with R-32 refrigerant in Japan at the end of 2012, with several million units since installed. Elsewhere, R-32 models have been introduced in Australia, New Zealand, India, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines,Malaysia and Indonesia and from 2013in Europe also.

What is R-32?

The chemical name for R-32 is difluoromethane. Its use has been proven over many years as a component of the refrigerant blend R-410A (R-410A is a blend of 50% R-32 and 50% R-125). Daikin along with other industry manufacturers and distributorsnow recognisethat using R-32 in its pure form instead of R-410A or other types of blends offers a number of advantages.

Why R-32 ?

Daikin has identified R-32 as the most promising next generation refrigerant for residential and commercial air conditioners. Compared to the commonly used refrigerant R-410A, the Global Warming Potential of R-32 is only one third, whileit allowsfor a smaller refrigerant volume and higher energy efficiency. As a single component refrigerant, R-32 is also easier to recycle and reuse, another environmental plus in its favour. With a lower flammability factor(R-32 refrigerant falls into category class 2L in ISO817), it can be safely applied in most air conditioning and heat pump applications.

Ahead of legal requirements

Under the new European F gas regulations introduced earlier this year, the placing on the market of new R-410A single split air conditioners (including air to air heat pumps) will be banned from 2025: from this time only refrigerants with a GWP value below 750 will be allowed. The Daikin models with R-32 refrigerant already complywith this requirement - 10 years ahead of the deadline!

Same user friendly benefits

The award winning design of Daikin Emura is now available as an R-32 product, with energy efficiency labels up to A+++. The wall-mounted FTXM series is also available with R-32, featuring an unobtrusive design and seasonal energy efficiency labels up to A++.

Both rangesfeature an intelligent eye sensor which automatically adjusts energy consumption in unoccupied rooms, a user friendly wireless remote controller and weekly timer. The user can also opt for app control (available for Android & iOS), providing full control whether at home or away.

Note to Editors/ Box out text:

What is GWP? What is a CO2 equivalent refrigerant charge?

The Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a value which expresses the “potential” impact on global warming if a refrigerant is released into the atmosphere. GWP is a relative value comparing the impact of greenhouse gases, in particular comparing the impact of 1kg of refrigerant to 1kg of CO2 over a period of 100 years. Although this impact can be avoided by preventing leakages and ensuring proper end of life recovery, choosing a refrigerant with a lower GWP value and striving to minimize the quantity of refrigerant in the system will reduce the environmental impact in the case emissions would accidentally occur.

When selecting an air conditioner or heat pump, customers can help to reduce the environmental impact by choosing a product with a lower CO2equivalent refrigerant charge (CO2 equivalent is the amount of refrigerant in kg multiplied with the GWP – sometimes also expressed in Tonne CO2 equivalent, which is kg x GWP divided by 1000).

For example, when selecting a 3.5 kW Daikin Emura air conditioner with R-32 refrigerant , the CO2equivalent refrigerant charge is 78% lower than the same model using R-410A . This can be explained by the lower GWP value of R-32 - one third of the GWP of R-410A, in combination with a 30% lower refrigerant charge.
