Job Title:Pathology Technician

Salary: £17210 - £20400 per annum, depending on skills & experience, salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Hours of Work:36.25 hours per week

Location:PM Facilities, Sutton Bonington Campus, Leicestershire

Reporting to:Senior Teaching Technician

Purpose of the Role:

Supporting post mortem examinations through preparation of carcasses and materials, and maintenance of facilities and equipment associated with teaching students undertaking the pathology rotation.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Prepare carcasses, set out equipment and materials associated with performing post mortem examinations on a range of animal species. Operate heavy duty lifting, pulling and cutting equipment. Assist the duty pathologist in sampling techniques as required. / 40%
2. / Ensure a safe work environment through upholding a high level of housekeeping in the work area, including cleaning and maintenance of equipment and protective clothing, and replacing chemicals and consumables as required. / 20%
3. / Support the running of a clinical histology service through the processing of samples; including the use of tissue processors, microtomes and both standard and specialised stains / 10%
4. / Catalogue teaching specimens, histology blocks and slides, maintaining accurate records of case numbers and locations. / 10%
5. / Liaise with and support UoN and Minster staff to ensure teaching requirements are met. Communicate with 3rd parties to coordinate carcass submissions, individual cremations and waste collection. / 5%
6. / Disposal of clinical and bio hazardous waste according to Health and safety protocols and legal requirements. / 5%
7. / Prepare reagents/chemicals/samples according to SOPs / 5%
8. / Support and advise students on Health and Safety issues, use of equipment and basic techniques. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education /
  • Two A-Levels in relevant subjects or equivalent vocational qualifications (NVQ, City and Guild), plus some experience in a relevant technical role; or, considerable work experience in a relevant technical role

Skills/Training /
  • Basic understanding of Health and Safety regulations and procedures and practical appreciation of hazards
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of basic principles of biology/anatomy
  • Driving licence unless disability precludes this

Experience /
  • Previous experience in a laboratory environment

  • Previous experience in pathology environment
  • Previous experience operating band saw and other heavy duty equipment

Additional Information

The role holder will primarily be based at the Post Mortem facilities at the AHPA site in Sutton Bonington.
The facilities are used by University of Nottingham and Minster Veterinary Practice.
The work involves a range of hazards, is of a sensitive nature and can be physically demanding.
The role may involve occasional out of hours work.
