A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Robert "Bob" Howe McGaughey II.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Robert "Bob" Howe McGaughey II, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Bob McGaughey was born on April 3, 1913, a native of Christian County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on March 22, 2003; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGaughey was the loving son of the late Robert Howe McGaughey and Rosalie Adams McGaughey; he was the devoted husband of the late Frances Wyatt McGaughey; he was the loving father of a son, Dr. Robert H. McGaughey III of Murray; and he also leaves behind a loving sister, Mrs. Martha Roberts of Louisville; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGaughey graduated from Hopkinsville High School in 1929, and he earned his bachelor's degree in journalism in 1933 from the University of Kentucky, where he also did post-graduate work in both law and agriculture; after graduation, he became advertising manager for B. F. Avery & Sons in Louisville, and he then served as field representative for the A. S. C. and West Kentucky Production Credit Association for two years before being called to active duty in 1941; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGaughey received his commission as lieutenant through the University of Kentucky's ROTC program, and he served his country with pride and distinction in the United States Army during World War II as a training officer at Fort McClellan until his discharge as a captain in 1943; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Bob McGaughey returned to his native Christian County, where he became the news editor for The Kentucky New Era; he served as the first farm and news director for WHOP radio in Hopkinsville, and his other media experience included being manager and editor of The Todd County Standard in Elkton, as news and farm director for WKOA, as farm editor for the Kentucky New Era, and as the Farm Bureau newsletter editor; and he also worked for 16 years with First City Bank in Hopkinsville as vice president in charge of the farm department; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGaughey was the recipient of the Kentucky Farm Bureau Communications Award and the Kentucky Farm-City Award, and he was recognized for his service to the 4-H Club and the Future Farmers of America Club; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGaughey was the author of four books: "Life With Grandfather," "This Is Your Weather," "Molly of the Shakers," and "The Way I Heard It"; and he also wrote several unpublished works, including "Where Destiny Leads Me," "Four Went Fishing," "The Women in 313," "The Initiation," and "Sermons from Stones"; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGaughey was a devout and active member of 60 years at the First United Methodist Church of Hopkinsville, where he was a lay speaker and a Sunday School teacher; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Bob McGaughey has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Robert "Bob" Howe McGaughey II, and extends to his family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Robert "Bob" Howe McGaughey II.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Dr. Robert H. McGaughey III, 1611 Loch Lomond, Murray, Kentucky 42071.
