GENERAL

The College

Atlantic College is an international Sixth Form College, located at St Donat’s Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan. There are around 340 students and 75 staff.

The IT Facilities

We have a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain, with around 200 Windows XP PCs and laptops running RM Community Connect 3 management tools. Additionally, there are 20 Macs used by the Art and Music Departments and around 60 thin client terminals.

Email is handled by an Exchange 2003 server and filtered by Clearswift MIMESweeper. We have a 50MBit leased line internet connection. Our firewall is a Smoothwall appliance, and all network switches are Cisco. The network is divided into VLANs, and we use certificates issued by a RADIUS server to authenticate College computer access to the network.

There are various servers running departmental software. Server data is backed up to a disk array, and then archived to DLT tape.

The College is part-way through a programme of modernisation of its IT facilities, and over the next few years we will be installing a large number of thin client terminals, a College database and a SharePoint portal, along with a general expansion and refresh of the current stock of equipment.

The IT Team

The existing IT Team consists of three people: Head of IT and two network managers. The new post will be an additional network manager.
