First World War Archive Volunteer

Role description

January 2014

In collaboration with 'On the Record', a not-for-profit oral history organisation, CAAT is planning to challenge pro-militarist voices on the centenary of the First World War with a project that will highlight the parallels between the arms trade in 1914 and now, with a particular focus on opposition to the arms trade during and after the war.

The role will include:

·  Travelling to meetings and local archive libraries

·  Finding relevant archival sources and using them to uncover case studies using written, photographic and oral evidence. For example, the experiences and attitudes of munitions workers during the First World War.

·  Researching and summarising case studies

·  Sharing information you've uncovered with others.

These case studies will contribute to a dedicated website on arms sales during the First World War. The role could also include taking part in discussions with young people about the material you have uncovered, and recording these discussions, or the results of your own research, as a podcast for use on a dedicated website.

Individuals will be expected to volunteer for eight days of research time over a two month period from Tuesday 25 February 2014. This will include an induction (on the 25 February), opportunities to discuss your findings with fellow volunteers and arms trade researchers, and opportunities for accompanied trips to archives with hands-on-training.

Qualities that are needed:

·  Ability to work carefully and rigorously

·  Ability to use IT programmes such as email, Skype and the internet for basic research.

·  A commitment to the aims of the project

·  Good written and spoken English

·  Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·  Reliable and capable of working to deadlines.

Benefits to be gained:

·  Experience of working with, and learning from, other volunteers and arms trade researchers
