Deadlines
- Event Entries are due by 5:00PM Tuesday, January 17, 2017.
- Judge Entries are due by 5:00PM Wednesday, January 18, 2017.
- Changes are due by 5:00PM Thursday, January 19, 2017. (After this, email the director).
Rules

Fees
- Entry fees are:
- $10 per team debate entry
- $5 per Lincoln Douglas entry
- $6 per Duet or Duo entry
- $3 each for all other entries.
- Please refer to the OSSAA manual for nuisance fees.
Judges
- All debate judges should be entered in the appropriate judge group (CX or LD/PF) even if they are also available to judge speech.
- All non-debate judges should be entered in the speech judge group.
- When entering judges, you may specify “No Friday” or “No Saturday” to indicate that a judge will not be available that day.
- If a judge is unavailable for specific times, please email the director.
- Any school that provides judges who are beyond the minimum requirements and available during rounds 3 and 4 of debate on Friday will receive a $5 credit per judge on their final invoice.
- High school students with more than 150 NSDA points are welcome to judge in the novice division. If any of your judges are novice only, please email the director.
- Judge requirements are as per the OSSAA manual.
- Judge requirements are:
- 1 judge per 2 CX entries or portion thereof
- 1 judge per 4 LD/PF entries or portion thereof
- 1 judge per 12 speech/acting entries or portion thereof.
Championship Debate Divisions
- Students in a championship debate event may not cross enter in any other event.
- There will be 6 preliminary rounds.
- We will use NSDA event rules except policy debate teams will get 8 minutes of prep time.
- At the end of preliminary rounds, we will have a short ceremony for speaker awards and to announce the first elimination round.
Championship Speech Division
- Students in the championship speech division may not cross enter in any other division.
- There will be 3 preliminary rounds in each event and they will start on Friday.
- We will use NSDA event rules for all NSDA main events.
- For all other events, we will use OSSAA rules except no event will be limited by grade level.
- Students may enter up to 2 events in each pattern (Congressional Debate as 2 events for cross entry purposes).
- The patterns are:
- Pattern A: Congressional Debate, Humorous Duet, Humorous Interp, Informative, International Extemp, Poetry, and Standard Oratory
- Pattern B: Domestic Extemp, Dramatic Duet, Dramatic Interp, Duo Interp, Monologue, Original Oratory, Program of Oral Interp, and Prose
Qualifying Divisions
- Students in a qualifying division may not cross enter in any other division.
- All OSSAA rules apply.
Novice Division
- Students in the novice division may not cross enter in any other division.
- A novice is defined as someone in their first year of competition or has not yet reached 9th grade. Anyone found ineligible for novice will be immediately disqualified.
- There will be 2 preliminary rounds in all speech events.
- We will use NSDA event rules for all NSDA main events except policy debate teams will get 8 minutes of prep time.
- For all other events, we will use OSSAA rules except no event will be limited by grade level.
- Some events will be combined (HD and DD are Duet Acting; DX and FX are Extemp; OO and SO are Oratory; and HI and DI are Interp).
- Union middle school students will be allowed to compete in novice, but Union will not be eligible for sweepstakes.
Debate Topics
- Policy Debate – Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic and/or diplomatic engagement with the People’s Republic of China.
- Lincoln Douglas – Resolved: Public colleges and universities in the United States ought not restrict any constitutionally protected speech.
- Public Forum – Resolved: In order to better respond to international conflicts, the United States should significantly increase its military spending.

Sweepstakes
- Sweepstakes awards for all divisions will be calculated based on the formula in the OSSAA manual.
- All non-OSSAA events will be calculated as individual events.
- The Grand Champion will be the school that earns the most points across all divisions.
Upon Arrival
- Please enter through Union Collegiate Academy entrance on the Northeast side of the school.
- Busses may park in the Northeast visitor parking lot in the front of the school.
- On Friday, wait in the Grand Hall before rounds begin.
- If you plan to arrive before 2:00 PM, please email the director.
- School gets out at 3:20 PM and rounds start at 3:45 PM, so please try to arrive before 3:00 PM.
