5th - 9th Grade Girls Basketball Rules – 2016

Players must register in the city where they live. Players registering outside their city of residence will eliminate their team from postseason play.

1. Rules used are the National Federation High School rules except where changed by the Recreation Departments involved in the league. (See below)

2. Eight (8) minute quarters – running clock. Clock will only stop on shooting fouls, injuries, and time-outs until the final minute of each quarter. Clock will be stopped on every whistle during the final minute of each quarter.

3. Each player must play at least 2 quarters of the game. This is a recreational league and we strongly suggest that each player play as much as possible each game. Please substitute all players equally.

4. Each team gets 2 thirty (30) second time-outs per half. Time-outs do not carry over from the 1st half to the 2nd half.

5. Overtime – If overtime is necessary, a 3 minute overtime will be played. The clock will stop on every whistle. Overtime will start with a jump ball. Each team will get 1 time-out. Unused time-outs from the 2nd half will carry over to the overtime period. If the game is tied after the overtime period, then we will go to “Sudden Death” (first team to score 3 points wins). No time-outs in Sudden Death play.

6. Full court press or back court pressure is allowed. Once a team is ahead by 15 or more points, that team may no longer press – no defense allowed above the 3 point line.

7. Technicals – THIS RULE APPLIES TO COACHES, PLAYERS AND PARENTS! Two (2) technicals will result in ejection from the game and suspension from the next scheduled game (this includes tournament games). Anyone who receives 3 unsportsmanlike technicals will be suspended for the remainder of the season (this includes tournament games also).

8. Three (3) point baskets will be recognized (if there isn’t a 3 point line marked on the court, then there are no 3 point shots - all baskets will count as 2 points.

9. You may start the game with 4 players but must have your 5th player by the end of half time or it will be considered a forfeit. If a team has less than 4 players, they will be given a 5 minute grace period before a forfeit is called. Players cannot be added to your roster after the 3rd game of the season.

10. If a team is ahead by 20 or more points, the scoreboard will NOT show the score. If a team is 20 or more points ahead, a running clock will be used. The clock will only stop for time-outs. If the losing team gets within 20 points, the running clock will discontinue. This running clock rule applies during the 2nd half of the game only.

11. No teams or players will be allowed on the court until their scheduled game time. If time allows, a warm-up period will be given to each team.

12. If your team is going to have snacks after the game, please make sure the snacks are given to the players outside the gym. Water bottles only are allowed in the gym – no other food or drink allowed!

13. Sportmanship – Good sportsmanship is expected from all. Coaches and parents are encouraged to be positive and supportive at all times. Teams, players, coaches, fans are evaluated for sportsmanship each game. Help make this a good, fun experience for all.
