DANCE PRODUCTION 2

Introduction

The definition of Dance Production is “Those elements that contribute to the magic of a performance but do not by themselves constitute a production.” In this course we will learn about the management, pre-production, production and post production aspects of producing a theatrical dance concert. In addition, we will experience various dance techniques and choreography.

Class Meeting

Dance Production is scheduled to meet on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30-8:30p. We will meet for class on Tuesdays 6:30-8:30pm. Thursday evenings should be put aside for committee meetings and rehearsals but we will not (unless announced) have formal class time on Thursdays. That additional time will be used during the actual week of the dance concert. Do not schedule any other class on Thursday from 6:30-8:30p.

Course Description

This course is designed to familiarize students with both the technical and production aspects of dance and to increase appreciation of dance in all its forms.Students must be available the week of the annual spring dance concert, March 27-April 2, to fulfill technical requirements.Dance Production 1 is recommended as a prerequisite.

Course Goals

  1. Increased appreciation of dance in many varying forms

2. Increased knowledge of the organizational and technical aspects of dance production
3. Involvement in the creative process of dance by participating in creative choreography and improvisation

4. Involvement in group and individual dance projects and producing dance concerts and other performances
5. Involvement in local, regional, and national dance activities
6. Intellectual and creative stimulation of the students by working together and participating in dance as a form of artistic expression

7. Ability to express verbally and in writing a description of the technical requirements for producing a dance concert

Course Materials

Equipment Required: Dance clothing and shoes appropriate to the technique. Please, NO jeans, khakis or street clothes.

Course Policies

Attendance:

One excused absence per semester is allowed without penalty, however, you may not be absent the week of March 27-April 2. This is our production week. If you need to miss class for any reason please notify the instructor. There will be a deduction of 11pts for each additional absence. Also, it is important to notify the instructor in a timely fashion for prolonged illness or disablilty.

Assignments are due when indicated. You are obligated to turn in assignments even if you are absent.

Students are obligated to be in class the following additional hours the week of the concert(these hours are approximate):
If, for any reason, you cannot be in class on the following dates (this is our production week) you should not take this course. The following times are approximate.

  • Sunday, March 27 (Noon to 5:00pm)
  • Monday, March 28 (on call)
  • Tuesday, March 29 (on call)
  • Wednesday, March 30 (6:00-?p) Technical Rehearsal
  • Thursday, March 31 (6:00 Dress Rehearsal)
  • Friday, April 1 (6:00p - end of concert) Concert
  • Saturday, April 2 (6:00p - end of strike) Concert and Strike

  • Students in this course will be expected to comply with the University of Pittsburgh's Policy on Academic Integrity. Any student suspected of violating this obligation for any reason during the semester will be required to participate in the procedural process, initiated at the instructor level, as outlined in the University Guidelines on Academic Integrity. This may include, but is not limited to, the confiscation of the examination of any individual suspected of violating University Policy. Furthermore, no student may bring any unauthorized materials to an examination, including dictionaries and programmable calculators.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

1. Participation in Dance Production, meetings, concerts, presentations, governance, committees, choreography, and production. See attendance policy.
2. Demonstration of dance skills in weekly classes.
3. Written summary and portfolio of semester's work.
4. Chairing a work committee (lighting, audio, stage management, props, costumes, etc.)
5. Attendance at a professional dance performance.
6. Written critique of a professional dance performance.
7. Attendance at weekly class and production week attendance.
8. Production assisting/dancing in the Spring Concert
9. Completion of written assignments.

Evaluation and/or Certification

  1. Evaluation of student participation in committees, production assisting, choreography and/or dancing in the annual concert (70% of total grade)
  2. Evaluation of written assignments(10% of total grade)
  3. Evaluation of written student summary and portfolio (10% of total grade)
  4. Evaluation of physical performance based on daily observation (10% of total grade)
