Terry Phillips Takes Home $10,000 For Winning The Doug Murphrey Memorial VIII
At Ark-La-Tex Speedway; COMP Cams® Signs On As Title Sponsor Through 2017
Vivian, LA –Terry Phillips of Springfield, Missouri, displayed his dirt racing versatility at the 8th Annual Doug Murphrey Memorial, fending off Chris Brown and Cade Dillard throughout the 50-lap affair to take home a big Modified payday.
Muddy conditions and a rainy forecast throughout the weekend did not deter a deep field of 83 Dirt Modifieds from doing battle during the COMP Cams® Doug Murphrey Memorial VIII at Gene Boyter’s Ark-La-Tex Speedway on May 30-31. After the event’s unique qualifying format that places emphasis on passing points during the Friday portion of the program and finishing position on Saturday, Terry Phillips found himself starting on the pole alongside Cade Dillard for the 50-lap main event. The duo battled for the first half of the race, which was only marred by one caution, until Chris Brown got by Dillard for second with 15 laps to go. The second and final yellow flag flew with just eight circuits remaining, allowing Brown to close in on Phillips. Brown mounted a challenge with a slide job on lap 48 but couldn’t get past Phillips’ No. 75 machine and finished second. This is the second time Phillips has won the prestigious event, also winning in 2012. Dillard managed a third-place result despite fading tires, with Dallas Everett and Chris Henigan rounding out the top five. Matt Cooper, Lucas Lee, Johnny Bone Jr., Jeremy Payne and Steve Whiteaker Jr. completed the top 10.
COMP Cams® and other performance brands handed out over $4,000 in contingency awards throughout the weekend. In an effort to reward non-qualifiers, fifteen $100 COMP Cams® certificates were presented after the event’s A-qualifying races, while Quarter Master® and Driven Racing Oil™ each provided five $100 vouchers for these contests. Only cars that didn’t make the main event were eligible to win. For the A-Main, COMP Cams® awarded certificates totaling $500 to first-place Phillips, $250 to Brown in second and $125 to Dillard for finishing third. Quarter Master® and Driven also provided payouts to the three podium finishers in the form of $250, $125 and $75 certificates, respectively.
The 2014 edition of the race was the first for COMP Cams® to support, but the valve train brand has signed on to serve as the title sponsor of the event through 2017. With this backing, COMP® hopes to further enhance the Doug Murphrey Memorial’s standing as one of the premier Dirt Modified races in the country.
