Retired QC physician self-publishes photo book

SHERBROOKE, QC | Just in time for High Summer, Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ Paulette’s new photographic portrait of Quebec’s Eastern Townships has just come off the press.

<I>The Eastern Townships</I> contains some 100 of Paulette’s color photographs made over the years throughout the backroads of this lovely region of southern Quebec.

The glossy, soft cover book (88 pp - $25) is bilingual (English and French), but has a minimum of text – it is a photo essay.

<I>The Eastern Townships</I> is available on the border at 3 Villages Printing and the Colby-Curtis museum in Stanstead, the Beaulne Museum in Coaticook, and various other outlets in the region.

Paulette, a retired surgeon and McGill graduate, has had a life-long love affair with photography that began when he was a teenager. He has also had a life-long love affair with the Eastern Townships, and this affection comes through in his photographs of this lovely, gentle region.

A few of the dozens of photographic highlights include the matched pair of horses working in a sugarbush (on the cover), the famous twelve-sided red barn in Mystic Village, the center spread of a winter scene near Melbourne. And, yes, there are Mounties in their scarlet splendor.

Paulette dedicated <I>The Eastern Townships</I> to his wife, Madge, who died early last year. They had traveled the backroads of the Townships for some forty years together while making the photographs in this book.

The Paulettes have two sons and two daughters. Laura, an artist who lives in Ontario, had a hand in designing and laying out the book. He also worked closely with Tim Doherty of VisImage in Lennoxville.

Paulette works mostly in color these days and, although he owns several digital cameras, prefers film.

His camera gear is all fairly new – a year ago last March he came face to face in his home with a burglar at 2 AM. The thief was holding a bag. The bag contained his cameras. The bold intruder took them with him.

Fortunately, the insurance company covered the loss. As far as Paulette knows, the burglar is still on the loose.
