Rough Draft to Final Copy check list

Your final paper is due on February 18 (A Day) or February 19 (B Day).

Check the following items before submitting.

___MLA format double spaced, 1 inch margins, header on right corner of all pages (including the works cited page), MLA heading, title, 12 point times new roman

_____Works Cited (Your Great Expectations Book and any other source you may have used to research characterization. If you used sparknotes or another internet source, you must list the webpage name (in italics), the date that you accessed, and the URL. This is on its own page but is still part of the paper. It does NOT have a new heading. Its page number will continue from your paper.) Format for book should be as follows:

Dickens, Charles. Great Expectations. City of Publication (first one listed if more than

One): Publication company, year published (most recent one if there’s more than

one).

_____Introductory paragraph. You should begin from broad (talking about the novel, Dickens, characterization, etc.) and narrow to your point. Last sentence should be a three-point thesis statement. (In Great Expectations Charles Dickens brings to life the supremely self confident, abrasive, and successful character Mr. Jaggers.)

_____Body paragraph one. You should have a topic sentence (When Jaggers first appears in Great Expectations, the reader quickly sees him has a supercilious individual.) Any quotes OR paraphrases must have documentation.

Example Direct quote: “He was a burly man of an exceedingly dark complexion, with an exceedingly large head and corresponding large hand” (81). (**note… the period comes OUTSIDE of the quotation marks after the parenthetical citation. There is NO punctuation in the parenthetical citation.)

Example Paraphrase: Pip first encounters the very large Jaggers on the stairs. In direct characterization Pip discusses the sheer size of the man making reference to an enormous head and hands the same size (81).

_____Body paragraph two Repeat the same process and body paragraph one using a second characteristic. (example topic sentence: Obviously, the lawyer’s own accomplishments impress Jaggers even more than those around him are impressed. This characteristic is no match, however, for his brusqueness.)

____Body paragraph three Process repeated for final (and most important) characteristic.

____Support Each of your three body paragraphs should have at least three examples proving yoru thesis.

_____Conclusion Minimum THREE sentences—make a definitive CONCLUSION about the type of character Dickens portrays. (Example. Through both direct and indirect characterization, Dickens leaves no doubt in the reader’s mind about the character of Mr. Jaggers. The character’s actions as well as the words and responses of other characters show Mr. Jaggers to be a truly brash and supremely self confident individual.)

_____Be sure your entire paper is written in THIRD person and is in present tense

_____Submitting in proper order (gradesheet/assignment sheet, checklist, final copy including works cited)
