Rules, participation and peculiarities

Competitions will be held according to the latest version of IOF Competition Rules for foot-o and Special Rules for World Cup.

Participation
The six best countries for men (Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Denmark) and the six best for women (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Russia) may enter 8 competitors.

All other countries may enter six competitors. The current individual World Champions may be entered additionally.

Special rules NORT

  1. The overall results for the NORT will be based on the overall time score in the three NORT-stages.
  2. There will be a bonus system for the best athletes in the first two races.
  3. Runners who leave the Tour after 1st or 2nd Stage will keep their World Cup points won before the withdrawal.
  4. World Cup points will be awarded for the overall NORT-standings and also for the results from stage 1 and 2.

Peculiarities of the stages

Stage 1: The competition will be organised as a mix between middle distance and sprint. One part of the course will be of middle distance character and rules, while one part (approx. 1/3 of total course length) will be sprint character. There will be a map change at the arena with a change of scale and map standard. The race is an individual start with no prior qualification. Bonus secondswill be given to the six best athletes aftermiddle distance section:First 60 bonus seconds, second 45 sec., third 30 sec., fourth 20 sec., fifth 10 sec., and sixth 5 sec. The bonus seconds will count for the overall Tour only, not for standings on Stage 1.

Stage 2: The competition will consist of a sprint qualification of regular length and style. The 30 best athletes will qualify for the finals, which will be run in heats of 6 athletes/heat in Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and Final. All the heats will have mass start without forking with the best athletes advancing to the next round.

Quarter-final 1: 1st, 10th, 11th, 20th, 21st and 30th of the qualification; QF 2: 4,7,14,17,24,27; QF 3: 5,6,15,16,25,26; QF 4: 2,9,12,19,22,29; QF 5: 3,8,13,18,23,28.

The semi-finals are for 12 athletes. The first two runners from each quarter-final automatically qualify for the semi-finals. The 11th and 12th qualifiers are runners with the two overall next fastest times from the quarter-finals. Semi-final 1: 1st and 2nd of QF 1 and 2 plus 2nd of QF 3 and the 11th qualifier; semi-final 2: 1st and 2nd of QF 4 and 5 plus 1st of QF 3 and the 12th qualifier.

The final is for 6 athletes. The two fastest runners from each semi-final and the two runners with the next best times qualify for the final.

The time from qualification will count for the overall NORT, while there will be a time bonus for the results in the heats. The six runners in the final will get bonus seconds 120-90-70-60-55-50. The other 6 runners in the semi-final will get bonus seconds 40-38-36-34-32-30 according to their running times in the semi-final.

The other 18 runners in the quarterfinals will get bonus seconds 18-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 according to their running times in the quarter finals. If one or more runners are not placed in the quarter-finals, semi-finals or finals, they will be regarded as being placed at the end of that group and are awarded bonus seconds accordingly.

Stage 3: The competition will be a chase start based on the overall results after two stages. The competition will have middle distance character and rules, but the courses will be 10-15 minutes longer than a regular middle distance.

Prize money

Prize money will be awarded to the best athletes in the overall NORT and to the best in each stage. The total amount will be at least 27 000 EUR.

The municipal centre of Tuusula and surroundings has been declared as embargoed areas in May 2009. Map of the embargoed area are shown below.

Terrain description

The race is combined middle distance and sprint orienteering. Terrain for middle distance is mixed forest, good visibility, dense network of paths and mainly good run-ability. Sprint is run in urban area in the centre of the town.

Maps, courses and winning times

Middle distance rules will apply for middle distance and sprint rules will apply for the sprint part of the competition. The start interval will be 1 minute.
