COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to introduce the student to most of the major disciplines of business, including general business, business ethics, forms of business ownership, economics, management and leadership, human relations marketing, information systems, accounting, financial management, money and banking, and business law. (3 credits).

Required Textbook: Pride,Foundations of Business, 4th Edition

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. To understand the basic principles of business ownership
  2. Understand the cultivation and management of a business in a diverse and global community.
  3. Recognize the importance of human resource management.
  4. Understand the basic principles and concepts of marketing.
  5. Understand principles and concepts of accounting.
  6. Understand methods of making effective decisions
  7. Learn effective proposal presentations.

GRADE DETERMINATION:

100 points / Attendance and class participation
200 points / Group/ Individual Assignments (Two per semester – 100 pts each)
50 points / In class assignments
300 points / Tests (Three per semester)

READING ASSIGNMENTS:

** Reading Assignments – The student is expected to read the assigned material before the scheduled date, and should be prepared to discuss assigned material in class. Students are expected to keep up with textbook readings, and should be prepared and ready to discuss and review assigned materials at all times. Students are responsible for all materials that relate to the course objectives.

There will be two (2) graded assignments throughout the semester. Topics will be assigned within 2 weeks of due date. Written assignments should be in essay form, completely answer the question, and should be no less than 2 paragraphs in length.

TESTS:

Tests will be given at the beginning of the scheduled class. There will be three (3)tests. All exams will consist of multiple choice questions and will cover material discussed in lectures and textbook reading assignments. There will be no makeup exams unless there is documentation to prove an emergency or illness.

INCOMPLETE:

(“I” Grade) when a student has failed to complete the requirements of a course, the student may be given an incomplete or “I” grade as long as the student has completed 80% of the assigned work. To be awarded an “I”, the student must present to the instructor valid reasons for not having completed the course requirements. The instructor and the student then complete an Agreement for Grade of Incomplete form. This agreement will determine the requirements for a course grade, including due dates for assignments, projects or tests; which must be completed by the end of the next major term, or a failing grade is assigned. A signed (by student and instructor) incomplete form is required to be submitted with any recorded grade of incomplete.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

The following constitutes academic dishonesty:

1)Cheating on an exam

2)Receiving help from other in work to be submitted, if contrary to the stated policies of the professor.

3)Plagiarizing, i.e., the taking and passing-off as one’s own, the ideas, writing, and/or work of another, without properly and accurately citing the source.

4)Submitting work from another course unless permitted by the professor’.

5)Assisting anyone to do any of the above.

ATTENDANCE:

Due to the nature of the mini term, attendance is mandatory and attendance will be taken twice – once in the beginning of class and once after our break.

Be Punctual: class will begin at 5:40pm. Due to traffic and other potential problems, I will give you a five minute leeway period. Please try to be on time.

It is the responsibility of the students to avail themselves of knowledge of these objectives and criteria as published and set forth by Miami Dade College. The professor will not grade the student on opinions expressed, unless such evaluation is specifically related to course requirements.
