Big Maths at Comely Park School:

Information for Parents/Carers

Big Maths is a daily sequential programme of mental maths provision with a strong emphasis on learned facts and developing the mental agility. Big Maths develops core skills in one clear method. All are taught in the same way, repeatedly, to embed fundamental skills. This session all our classes are using this resource.

Big Maths is based upon the principle that there are 4 core skills that lie at the heart of numeracy.These core skills form the platform for virtually all other maths skills and are known as CLIC ….

Counting

Learn Its

It’s Nothing New

Calculations

CLIC lessons last for around 20 minutes and pupils participate Monday-Thursday. Please note that after the 20 minute CLIC lesson the children move onto ‘outer maths’ covering other areas like shape, measure, data handling, decimals, percentages, etc.Friday is a challenge day. Pupils complete a ‘Beat That’ test and a termly ‘CLIC’ test. Friday’s lesson also focuses on a particular numeracy strategy eg. halving/doubling, place value, partitioning, coin facts etc.

Counting:

The children learn to count in a variety ways; forwards, backwards, evens/odds, not always from zero and in different sequences of numbers eg. 1s, 2s,3s, 5, 10, 25s, 50s,100s, etc.

Learn Its:

A ‘Learn it’ is a shortcut to counting. It is a taught fact and the children should recall the answer as quickly as they know their own name. Pupils use terms like ‘switcher’; 6+7=13 switch it 7+6=13.

Fact families, eg;

6+7=13 4x3=12

7+6=13 3x4=12

13-7=6 12-- 4=3

13-6=7 12-- 3=4

There are 72 Learn Itsand the order for learning them is detailed below. The children will learn the whole fact family as they focus on each Learn It.

Step / Addition / Multiplication
1 / 1+1, 2+2
2 / 3+3,4+4, 5+5
3 / 1+2, 2+3 / Multiples of 10
4 / 2+8, 3+7, 4+6 / Multiples of 5
5 / 4+2, 5+2, 6+2, 7+2 9+2, 4+3, 5+3, 6+3
6 / 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9 / Multiples of 2
7 / 3+8, 3+9, 4+7, 4+8, 4+9 / X10 Table
8 / 4+5, 5+6, 6+7, 7+8, 8+9
/ X5 Table
9 / 5+9, 6+9, 7+9, 5+7,5+8, 6+8 / X2 Table
10 / X3 Table
11 / X4 Table
12 / X8 Table
13 / *The 6 Fact Challenge
6x6=36,6x7=42,7x7=49,9x6=54,9x7=63,9x9=81
14 / X11 Table
15 / X12 Table

*The last 6 facts to learn from learning the times tables to that point.

It’s Nothing New

The part of the CLIC lesson where the children make connections using COUNTING and LEARN ITS;

6+7=13 60+70=130 ....

6 million add 7 million is 13 million

0.6 + 0.7 = 1.3

or

3 x 8 = 24 3 x 80 = 240 30 x 80 = 2400

30+40=70 then 30p+40p=70p or

30g+40g=70g

Calculation

The previous three phases are combined to provide a calculation structure.
