Chain of Communication in Event of Athletics Related Injury

Athlete

Athletic Trainer

ParentCoachPhysician/nurse/PA

  1. Athletes, coaches, and parents should notify the athletic trainer as soon as realistically possible after an injury occurs, ideally within 24 hours to ensure proper medical attention is received. See below for specific contact information for the LNCP Team Physicians.
  1. In the event that an athlete needs to be seen by a physician, the athletic trainer can serve as a liaison to the team physicians to help schedule appointments during the times reserved for student athletes.
  1. The athletic trainer will keep coaches informed and up to date regarding the injury status of all athletes and will explain any modifications that may need to be made for the athlete. Activities may be modified per the discretion of the athletic trainer and/or team physician.
  1. Athletes that are referred to a physician will not be allowed back to participation in any capacity until a clearance note from a physician is provided and the athletic trainer clears them to play. The athletic trainer reserves the right to withhold any athlete from play at any time if he/she feels that their participation risks further harm to him/herself or teammates (eg- a lineman protecting the quarterback).

*If the family has a past relationship with a physician, or would prefer a different physician, communication in advance of the appointment with the athletic trainer would be greatly appreciated so any relevant clinical findings can be forwarded on to the physician.

Concussion

Concussion, or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (commonly abbreviated MBTi) is a special type of injury requiring clearance from an physician licensed to practice medicine in all its branches in Illinois. In accordance with state law, any athlete that presents with concussion like symptoms will be removed from any and all athletic participation until cleared by a physicianand the athletic trainer. It is preferred that these athletes see a physician with a thorough understanding of concussion (such as the team physicians listed below) within 24 hours of injury.

Final clearance and return to play will be the decision of the Team Physician and/or the athletic trainer. Furthermore, the athletic trainer and administration reserve the right to exclude any student-athlete from participation in sport IN ANY CAPACITY and impose specific academic accommodations until said student-athlete has completed any and all requirements of the concussion protocol.

Once diagnosed with a concussion, it is important to allow the brain to recover from the injury. This is done through gradual “Return to play” and “Return to Learn” protocols that are discussed in the LNCP concussion protocol, housed in the athletic department for further review. These may include and are not limited to: removal from physical activity(eg-PE), allowing additional time to complete assignments and/or exams. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis and reviewed by the administration, athletic trainer, and team physician as needed.

In reference to the “Return to Play” protocol specifically, the general recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control is to follow a six-step return to play protocol, nick-named “Brain-G”. It is as follows:

Day 1. B. “Bike” The athlete will bike for approx. 30 minutes

Day 2. R. “Run” The athlete will run for approx. 30 minutes

Day 3. A. “Agility” The athlete will conduct sport specific sprinting & agilities

Day 4. I. “In-red” The athlete will be allowed NON-CONTACT practice

Day 5. N. “No restrictions” The athlete is allowed to practice with no restrictions

Day 6. G. “Game” The athlete is allowed to participate in game play

*The athlete must remain symptom free for 24 hours to progress to each of the next phases. Additionally, accommodations and/or modifications may be made to this protocol at the discretion of the team physician, athletic trainer, and administration (eg- a non-contact athlete).
