St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin January 31 & February 1, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

JESUS TAUGHT “WITH AUTHORITY”

That Jesus didn’t teach like the scribes was very significant. After all, it was the scribes who taught the scriptures. They were the ones who knew the religious doctrine and taught it to the people. And though frequently criticized in the Gospels, they weren’t bad people by definition. Many of them were probably generous, decent, truthful people.

But Jesus was a teacher of a different sort altogether. It was as though he didn’t need to refer to the scriptures or to the teaching of anyone else at all. He had the authority himself. Imagine the unusual impression he must have made on his listeners!

It has been suggested that Jesus was reputed to teach “with authority” because the crowds instantly recognized the truth of what he said. Why? Because he spoke the truth that was already in their hearts.

GOD’S WORD IS ALWAYS BEING SPOKEN

Centuries earlier, God had promised through Jeremiah that “the days are coming . . . when . . . I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts” (Jeremiah 31:31, 33). Of course, “the days to come” are always here and now. The reign of God is always “at hand.” So God’s word is always being spoken.

Usually, though, we miss God’s word, as available as it always is. It’s as if a movie, filled with wonder and excitement, were always playing away for our enjoyment; meanwhile, we manage to busy ourselves with other things—and eventually wander off—not willing to give our full attention.

What Jesus did was stir up a message that had been placed deep within his listeners before they were born, etched in their hearts by God. “Wake up!” he urged, and some people didn’t wander off. They listened, “spellbound.”

And what of us? Must we wait for a charismatic teacher to come and wake us up? Well, we may wait a long time. Let’s not give in to the old “homilies are stale” and “church is boring” excuses. God’s word is always being spoken. If only we can learn to pay attention, we will be spellbound.

Today’s Readings: Deuteronomy 18:15–20; Psalm 95:1–2, 6–9; 1 Corinthians 7:32–35; Mark 1:21–28

Pastor’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

How often I have heard parents say to a child, "I'm telling you this for your own good!" "I just want to spare you the hurt!"

Our first reading and our second reading sounds like God is saying somewhat the same to us. An expression of God's parental love for us, to spare us, to guide us on our journey in this world. We must remember that Paul is challenging them to focus on The Lord and His promise of life, because His return is fast approaching. Would that all of us could a avoid worry and anxiety as we face each new day! While that may not be overly realistic today it is a sign of our trust in the love of God for us that truly lightens the load so to speak. The lives of the saints, our brothers and sisters, make the point that we can know peace only when we 'abandon' ourselves to the Lord's love. The life of the Christian is a life full of possibilities, because we focus on God, creator of all and trust that His promise of Fatherly love is proven daily. Jesus reveals this mystery in His teaching recognized as something new and presented with real authority. Let us trust more deeply, let us open our eyes to the beauty and fulfilled promises of the past and the present, let us be as trusting as little children who know how much they are loved and cherished by their parents.

'Blessings' are very much a part of every experience of faith. A formal cry for God's help in daily life. These blessings of things such as candles remind us that God is always with us, just believe! Blessings if devotional items such as images of the saints or of the mystery of Jesus, rosaries, water, a cross, set these items apart as instruments of God to remind us and encourage us to persevere even in bad times because God is ever present. These items are called 'sacramentals' because we have asked God to grace us as we use them in our devotions and prayers. We should treat these items with respect and cherish them as they bring us closer to and help us focus on God and our union with Him. Throughout the year there are many items blessed to lead us and make us aware of God's involvement in our lives. The candles we bless this weekend, the ashes we will use on 'Ash Wednesday,' the palm we wave on Palm Sunday and many other such items we will encounter in the weeks and days ahead.

God bless us all and keep up the 'good' work, Fr. Tully

Question of the Week

Ordinary Time

For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Theme: Jesus has power over evil.

Step 1: Listen to the Word—As you hear today’s Gospel with its shouting demons, what words or phrases strike you? What is in this reading that touches your heart?

Children: Name some bad things that you want to pray that Jesus will take away from our world.

Youth &Adult: What are the evils in today’s world that you pray that God will free us from?
