SPI 7.Inq.1 Design a simple experimental procedure with an identified control and appropriate variables.
Learning Goal / E.Q How do I use the scientific method / I can use the scientific method to complete a simple experiment and identify the control and variable, while also completing a lab report.
EQ: How do we write a lab report using the scientific method?
What are control and variables?
Vocabulary: hypothesis, infer, controlled experiment, variable, independent variable, dependent variable, constant. / Objective: I can name and explain 4 out of 5 steps of the scientific method.
E.Q How do I use the scientific method and pinpoint variables? / E. Q: What do I know about the Scientific Method?
Activator / 1.Students review the diagram of the scientific method in their science notebooks. / 2.) The teacher will ask students what they know about controls and variables. Students will complete a KWL on control and variables. Students will write what Know about controls and variables, what they want to know. Then at the end of the lesson what they learned.
Students will also name the six steps of the scientific method.
(Students write all of this down when they enter the room) It is posted on the board. / 1.Students review the diagram of the scientific method in their science notebooks.
2. Students will make a variable foldable and pick out variables in different situations. / 1. Students will re-watch the Scientific Method BrainPop.
Teaching Strategy / 1. Students will complete QR code task cards. / 1)Students will conduct an experiment-in groups of two, using the steps of the scientific method, over Does Soap Float( Example Lab Report is on my webpage).
  1. The teacher will go over the control and variables in the lab.
  2. The teacher will model her expectations of what goes into a lab report.
  3. Students will write the lab report as they conduct the experiment.
  4. When finished students will grade themselves with the lab rubric.
/ 1)Students will complete scientific method task cards in groups. Students will write the answers to their task cards in their scientifi notebooks. / 1. Students will complete the Sortify Scientific Method Game.
2. Students will take the BrainPOP Graded Quiz.
Summarizer / 1)Students will answer the conclusion questions. / 1)Name the steps of the scientific method in order.
Homework / Start thinking about a science fair topic / Scientific Method quiz on Thursday!
