The Guide Chapter Project: Connecting Old and New

“The concept of eternal and cyclical time lies at the heart of the Hindu world view and is closely related to the concept of atman (Hindu sages claim that the individual's self-understanding determines his or her perception of the world). Hindus consider the real self to be ever-existing, not only in the future but also from the past. This notion of two-way eternity, however, is not reserved solely for the realm of spirit (Brahman) but extends to this temporal world.” (

Narayan raises a question about the nature of time in the first chapter of his novel. He introduces a story within a story: first, the story told to the reader by a third person narrator; then, Raju’s story about his past told in first person to Velan at a later time (in the future). Connections between the ancient and modern also run throughout the novel, in the form of the cave paintings studied and written about by Marco and the ancient dance form revived by Rosie (Bharatnatyam).

Overview: In a group of 4-5(six total groups), you will become an expert on one of the later chapters in the novel (6 – 11). In the spirit of combining the past and the present (and because it will be fun), you will determine a dominant motif and effectofyourchapter, which you will represent through new media: tweets, Snapchats, a Facebook page or Facebook posts, Instagram posts, a Pinterest board, memes, YouTube videos, vlogs, Tumblr posts, etc.

Instructions:Develop a 15minute (MAXIMUM) lesson on your chapter using PPT/Prezi that includes the following elements:

1.Your dominant effect and the presentation of it through new media representation (alternatively, this can be done using a different program or on paper)

2.Rationale: explain how and why this new media represents your dominant effect (on the PPT/Prezi, include the most salient points in bulleted form).

  • Why did you choose this particular form of new media? Why is it the appropriate form to represent your DE?
  • Break down your created piece for us. Explain it andback up your interpretation with evidence from the text.

3.Now bring your classmates into a discussion of the chapter:

  • Develop 3 – 5 discussion questions for the class. Questions should be open-ended and allow for varying interpretations backed by evidence. Consider questions about conventions the author uses, questions involving puzzling aspects of the text, and questions asking for comparison between the three novels.
  • Lead your classmates in a discussion of the chapter using at least one of your questions (all the questions should be on your PPT/Prezi). Make sure you’re walking around facilitating your classmates’ discussions.

4.Have your students complete an Exit Slip giving you feedback on your lesson or asking them to answer a question about the chapter. This can be done via paper or electronically (e.g. Kahoot).

Notes:

  1. Because your participation is vital as an audience member, you will receive 5 points for participating at least once throughout this project.
  2. On the due date, email me your presentation (the file or link).
  3. Beware of school-blocked sites. Double-check that your presentation can be viewed by viewing it with a school computer. If you want to use a school-blocked site, take screen shots, print then use the doc cam, etc.

Make your PPT/Prezi creative & interesting and AVOID doing the following:

  1. Reading from the PP/Prezi (use notes/notecards). Most of your teaching should be verbal…the PP/Prezi should act only as a visual aid to enhance what you are saying.
  2. Too much text
  3. Few or no images
  4. Text that is too small for the class and teacher to read
