HISTORY:TheEAANewsletterAwardstartedwhen membersofEAAChapter45inPittsburgh,Pennsylvaniawanted todosomething specialtorecognize thehardworkanddedication chapternewsletter editorsputintotheirwork. Initially,themembersofEAAChapter45 handledallaspectsof this award,includingsolicitingchapterstoentertheir newsletters, thejudgingprocess,selectingandorderingawards,andmakingthepresentation duringEAAAirVen- ture. Overtheyears,thepopularityandadministrationoftheEAANewsletterAwardgrewquitelarge,soin1990 themembersofEAAChapter45,turnedtheoveralladministrationoftheawardovertotheEAAChapterOffice.

PURPOSE:ThepurposeoftheEAANewsletter EditorAwardistorecognizeboththechapternewsletter editorand thechapterfora trulyoutstandingcommunicationtool,theirchapternewsletter.Thevariousjudgingcategoriesare intendedtobothrecognizeexcellenceandachievement, withoutunfairlyprovidinganadvantage toanychapter basedonsizeor financialstatus.

WHOISELIGIBLETO WIN?

Eacheditoriseligibletowinfirstplaceonlyonceforanygivenchapterandtheymustbe acurrentEAAandchapter member.Thereisnolimittothenumberoftimesaneditorcanwinotherpositions.However,onceaneditorhas won1stplacetheyarenolongereligibletowinotherplacesforthesamechapter.Theeditoriseligibletowin1st placeagainiftheyjoina differentchapter.

WHATTIMEPERIODWILLBEJUDGED?

NewslettersforthemonthsofMarchthroughMay(3months)willbejudged. Chapterswishingtosubmittheir

newslettersforjudgingmustsendonepacket,containing allthreemonthsofnewsletters, totheChapterOfficeby May31st. ANewsletterAwardEntryFormmustbecompletedandincludedinthepacket. Materialsshouldbe mailedtothefollowingaddress:EAAChapterOffice,POBox3086,Oshkosh,WI 54903-3086.

HOWMANYJUDGESANDHOWARETHEYSELECTED?

Judgesmayconsist ofanyofthefollowing: pastawardwinners, EAAstaffandchaptermembers.TheEAAChapter Office willappointthejudges. Thejudge’schapternewsletterwillnotbeeligibletowinthe awardduringajudging year.

HOWISTHEJUDGINGCONDUCTED?

EachchapterwishingtoparticipateintheawardmustsubmitonepacketwithnewslettersfromMarchthrough May.ThiswillbeinadditiontothemonthlymailingofthenewslettertotheChapterOffice.Chaptersshould continuetheirmonthlymailings.Inaddition,anawardentryformmustbecompletedandenclosedinthepacket ofnewsletters.

Thefirstround ofjudging isconductedbyEAAstaffandisanoverall,subjectivereview thatwillqualify chapters for thesecond judginground. Forthesecondjudginground,thenewsletters thatqualifiedwillbesenttoeachjudge forreview. Ajudgingsheetiscompletedforeachchapterbyeveryjudgeinthissecondround. Eachjudgethen forwardsthescorestotheChapterOffice.

SCORINGTHEFINALISTNEWSLETTERS

Pointsareawardedinfullandhalfpointincrements. Asjudgesrecordtheirscores,thereisroomonthescoring sheetforcommentsabouttheirlikes/dislikesaboutthenewsletter.Thejudgingsheetsaretabulatedforeach

chapter,addedtogetherand thendividedby the numberofjudgesresultinginanaveragescore. TheChapterwith thehighestaveragescorewillreceive firstplaceanddowntheline. EAAreserves therighttowithholdpresentation ofawardsif nonominationsmeetthecriteriaorifinsufficientnominationsarereceived.

*Participationbyotherchaptermembers,asevidencedbybylinesforarticlesorcreditgivenforphotographs.

*Name,chapternumberandlocationreadilyidentifiable

*Informationaboutchaptermembers(newpilotratings,airplanes,members,etc.)

*Thenewsletterservesaschapterhistory,sothenewslettershouldincludestoriesaboutPEOPLEandEVENTS.

2—APPEARANCE

Anewsletter mayhaveterrificcontent,buttheoveralllookofthenewsletter maybecluttered,orwithtoolittle whitespace,making ithardtoread. Thejustification andsizeofthefontmaymakeitdifficult toread.Sometimes theselectedfont(s)isnotthemostattractiveorcleanlooking,oristhewrongsize,e.g.,toosmalltoreadeasily. Toomuchofagoodthingcanbeaproblem,somultiplefonts,notmultiple sizeswithinthesamefont,canbea detriment.

3—LAYOUT

Thelayout,likethepreviouscriteria,isverysubjective. Isthereanarticleonthefrontpagethatgetsthereader’s

attention? Minutesdonotbelongonthefrontpage. The newslettershouldhaveaname. Ingeneral,placement ofkeyitemsshouldappearinthesameplaceeachmonthforreadyaccessforthemembers. Whenyouwantto knowwhat’sonthecalendarofevents,doyouknowwheretolook? Aretheretoomanycolumnsorarethe wordsjammedtogetherand/orhyphenatedanddifficulttoread?

4—CONSISTENCY

Doesthechapter produceanewslettereverymonth?HaveallcopiesbeensubmittedtotheEAAChapter Office? Isthequalityconsistent?Aretheirregularnewslettercolumncontributors?

ANNOUNCEMENTOF THETOPWINNERS

PriortoAirVenture eachyear,thetopeditorswillbenotifiedbytheChapter Officethattheywereselectedasan awardrecipient.TheactualawardplacingwillbeannouncedduringEAAAirVentureOshkosh.If thepersoncan- notattendAirVenture,heorshecanarrangetohaveanotherChaptermemberorafriendtoaccept theawardin theirplace.Ifnot,theawardwillbemailedtotheeditor.
