Here Are a Few Suggestions

Course Description:This course focuses on developing the writing, speaking, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension skills of students of intermediate French. The students should have taken French 1-2 or equivalent to be enrolled.

Expectations for the Foreign Language Student: Learning a foreign language is a difficult endeavor for students living in an English-speaking environment. For most students, their exposure to French is limited to the 55-minute class period each day. This is not a sufficient amount of time to become proficient in a foreign language. Therefore, you must be prepared to spend time outside of class. There are many ways to ensure your success in French.

Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Pay close attention in class.
  2. Ask questions whenever you do not understand.
  3. Practice outside of class.
  4. Review lessons daily.
  5. Do your homework the day it is assigned.
  6. Complete make-up work as quickly as possible.
  7. Come in for extra help.
  8. Work with a study partner.

Required Materials:In order to be well prepared every day, you must bring the following materials.

  1. A spiral notebook*4. Cahier (workbook)
  2. A pen or a pencil5. A dry erase marker (optional)
  3. Lined paper

*It is imperative that students have a secure and organized place to keep their French notes. Each student is required to have a spiral notebook that is used only for French class. All course notes must be kept in the spiral notebook. You are responsible for material written on the board or overhead and/or covered orally in class.

Rules of the class: Students are expected to adhere to all guidelines for student conduct listed in the student handbook. Specific classroom behavioral expectations include:

  1. Be prepared for class.
  2. Stay working at your assigned seat until you are dismissed.
  3. Use appropriate language.
  4. Treat yourself and others with respect.

Consequences for failure to comply with the above rules:

  1. Teacher conference/15 minute detention
  2. 1 hour detention
  3. 1 hour detention and parent notification
  4. 1 hour administrative detention
  5. Administrative referral – consequence to be determined by the Dean of Students

*Please note that student may be referred to the dean’s office at the teacher’s discretion at any time in the disciplinary process.

Tardies: Students are to be in their assigned seats when the final bell rings and be ready to participate in classroom activities. Anyone entering the class without a pass after the final bell is tardy. The consequences for tardies are stated in the Student Handbook and should be reviewed. A student will lose credit in a course after receiving a combination of 12 absences or tardies. Any student found in the tardy sweep room on test day will receive an automatic one-hour detention.

Grading:

100% - 90% = 1

89% - 80% = 2

79% - 70% = 3

69% - 60% = 4

0% - 59% = 5

Grades for each nine weeks will be based on homework/classwork, quizzes, chapter tests and performance based assessments.

Homework/Classwork 5%*

Quizzes 15%

Tests 30%

Speaking assessments 40%

Final exam 10%

*Late homework will be accepted. Any homework received after the due date/time will receive half credit.

Make-up work:The student is responsible for making up all work missed during an absence. I will maintain a homework calendar in the classroom that should be consulted as soon as the student returns to class after an absence. Students have two days for each day missed to turn in an assignment and one week to make up a test after returning to class. All assignments given prior to the absence are due upon the student’s return to class. It is the student’s responsibility to consult the homework calendar and to complete the missing assignments.

Additional Assistance:I am available to assist students daily before school beginning at 7:30 AM and after school until 3:30 PM. I am also available during Wednesday Learning Center from 8:30-9:20. Additional appointment times may be scheduled as necessary. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or to ask questions. I will always make time to work with students or to meet with parents.
