HE THAT HATH EARS TO HEAR, LET HIM HEAR

(John 16:12-14) I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear[Gk: carry, take up] them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come [into your heart], he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak:and he will show you things to come[the future revealed]. He shall glorify me: for he shall receiveof mine[Gk: of me] [i.e., the Bible: John 1:14], and shall show it unto you[the past as history, the present as experience, and the future as life eternal in the loving bosom of the Father].

1. show = Heb: anaggello, an-ang-el'-lo; to announce (in detail):--declare, rehearse, report, show, speak, tell /// aggelos, ang'-el-os; (to bring tidings); a messenger; esp. an "angel"; by impl. a pastor:--angel, messenger.
2. (John 1:14) And the Word[of God]was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH IS COME

(Acts 2:1-4) And when the day of Pentecost[Gk: fiftieth day (being implied) from Passover] was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place [ONE-NESS]. And suddenly there came a sound from heavenas of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them [intimating individually]. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other [Gk: strange] tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance [i.e., the Spirit was speaking].

1. tongues = Gk: glossa; the tongue; by impl. a language (spec. one naturally unacquired).
2. sat = Gk: to seat down, i.e. set (fig. appoint); intrans. to sit (down); fig. to settle (hover, dwell):--continue, set, sit (down), tarry.
3. Commentary: cloven = By association, were I a “clean” animal with cloven hoofs such as a sheep, which in a very special sense I am, I could walk in two worlds, the physical world and the spiritual world, and I do. Perhaps then, “cloven tongues like as of fire” is provision for us to talk in two worlds, to speak, to utter God’s Word in two worlds. Please recall also that “our God is a consuming fire.” (Heb 12:29)

DEVOUT MEN

(Acts 2:5-11) And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews,devout men[Gk: religiously pious][men who already had heard and/or had read the Word of God and were believers], out of every nation under heaven. Now when this [latter event] was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language [i.e., they heard with understanding]. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue [Gk: dialect], wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

1. confounded = syn: confused, perplexed, mystified, baffled, puzzled, bewildered.
2. language = Gk: dialektos; a (mode of) discourse, i.e. "dialect."
3. (Mat 11:15) He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [Mat = 6x; Luke = 2x; Rev = 8x]
4. Commentary: The Holy Spirit spoke through the Galilaeans in their own language, but was heard and understood in the “devout” recipient’s own language because each “devout” recipient had an internal interpreter, whereas the “other” non-devout recipients did not.

IN THE LAST DAYS

(Acts 2:12-21) And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others[not devout, but unsaved men and women]mocking said, These men are full of new wine[i.e., drunk]. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken[Gk; listen] to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day [9:00am]. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood [“the sixth seal” Rev 6:12], beforethat great and notable day of the Lord come[the Lord’s Second Coming]:And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved [i.e., a really big time revival shall precede our Lord’s Second Coming].

(Acts 2:22-28) Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked handshave crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast[the past] made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt[the future] make me full of joy with thy countenance [Gk: appearance, presence] [i.e., with thy Second Coming].

(Acts 2:29-33) Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre[Gk: grave, tomb] is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet [David], and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ[Gk: anointed, i.e. the Messiah] to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see [“cloven tongues like as of fire” verse 3] and hear [“we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God” verse 11].
