GUIDE RIGHT PROGRAMS

The Core Pillars of Guide Right:

· Self Identity - discipline, assurance, awareness and appearance

·Training – academic, career advancement and sports

·Competition – politics, career advancements and sports

·Social – communication, etiquette and manners

·Health Education – PE, sex education, drug education, health and safety

NOTE: The core pillars are the basis for all Guide Right Programs. Individual program directors will incorporate some or all of the core pillars into their respective programs.

Kappa League

The Kappa League is an organization oriented toward helping young men of high school age cultivate and develop their leadership talents, with respect to the preparation for collegiate and societal ventures. The organization provides challenging yet rewarding experiences, which enhance the lives of the students. Since the fundamental purpose of Kappa Alpha Psi is ACHIEVEMENT, it is therefore, the Fraternity’s primary purpose to help these young men to achieve worthy goals for themselves and to make constructive contributions to the community when leadership roles become their responsibility.

Through club oriented activities, the officers and membership of the Kappa League perform projects and participate in workshops that will expose them to planning, execution, and reporting concepts while stimulating good leadership characteristics designed to raise their educational and social skills. All activities and programs are taken from the core pillars of Guide Right.

Jr. Kappa League

The Jr. Kappa League program is centered on providing mentoring, tutoring, and direction through leadership. The emphasis of the program is on students between the ages of 10 to 14. The Jr. Kappa League is an organization oriented toward helping young men grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. It provides both challenging and rewarding experiences, which richly enhance their lives. Students are always encouraged to establish academic and personal goals, as well as, providing community service. This group meets monthly at ThomasJeffersonMiddle School located in ArlingtonVA. Students areencouraged to apply for the Kappa League program for high school students when they become eligible.

Kamp Kappa

"Kamp Kappa" is the cornerstone the Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter's Guide Right program. "Guide Right" is the national youth-oriented community service program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter and the Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund, Inc., have designed Kamp Kappa to provide positive outdoor and educational experiences for up to fifty young men between the ages of 10-15 years. The campers come from both inner-city and suburban environments. The camp is held at the Camp William B. Snyder "Cubworld"in Haymarket, Virginia. The camp is located in a rustic environment which is ideal for exposing them to environmental and ecological education. The camp is a six-day overnight experience with activities managed by professional counselors and supported by volunteers from members of the local DC area Kappa chapters. Kamp Kappa is structured to provide activities that foster the spirit of team building, self-respect, and respect for others. Activities include games of skill, team exercises, confidence and leadership building tasks--all of which are designed to provide moderate physical challenges, but to stimulate creative thinking. These team-building exercises are dispersed throughout the day and are intermingled with group discussions and lectures on health and drug awareness, cultural diversity, personal hygiene, and etiquette. The camp also includes activities such as canoeing, hiking, and swimming.

Woodley Hills

The Woodley Hills Gents project is an effort based at the WoodleyHillsElementary School in Alexandria, VA. The program assists male children with practical gentleman etiquette issues. Activities will focus on various topics and how to act accordingly. Most sessions will consist of role playing activities – either done by volunteers or the children or both. Kappa Volunteers will share information about our careers through interactive question and answer period. The sessions will take place in the WoodleyHillsElementary School library

Know Your History

The Know Your History program is a comprehensive study on African American history. Visual aids are used; notes made by a History major, field trips, Internet sources, artifacts and antiques. The goal of the program is to use history as a vehicle to enlighten youth about culture and heritage, and about themselves. The information is used to be a tool to help deal with social barriers. This program holds both boys and girls ages 8-18. The program moves through the history from Africans, through slavery up to the present.

Lego Robotics (First Lego League)

The primary goal of the Alexandria-Fairfax Robotics program is to assist students understand the practical application of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a fun and friendly environment. Research shows that students from various multicultural and socioeconomic backgrounds do not generally participate in nor perform well in programs that in involve STEM-related activities. Thus, through this initiative and in collaboration with the FIRST Lego League, we endeavor to create an environment that will encourage and foster underrepresented students to become active practitioners in STEM fields.
