Choral Call to Worship: Come Let Us Worship and Bow Down

*God, the Lord, a King Remaineth Trinity Hymnal №64

*Prayer of Invocation and Thanksgiving

*Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Proverbs 31:1-9

The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him:

What are you doing, my son? What are you doing, son of my womb? What are you doing, son of my vows? Do not give your strength to women, your ways to those who destroy kings.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel,it is not for kings to drink wine,

or for rulers to take strong drink, lest they drink and forget what has been decreedand pervert the rights of all the afflicted. Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;let them drink and forget their povertyand remember their misery no more. Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

*Praise Song Something Beautiful

Something beautiful, something good
All my confusion He understood
All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife
But he made something beautiful of my life

(Repeat 3x)

Unison Confession

Almighty God, who is rich in mercy to all those who call upon You; hear us as we come to You humbly confessing our sins and transgressions; and imploring Your mercy and forgiveness. We have broken Your holy laws by our deeds and by our words, and by the sinful affections of our hearts. We confess before You our disobedience and ingratitude, our pride and willfulness; And all our failures and shortcomings toward You and toward our fellow men. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; And of Your great goodness grant that we may hereafter serve and please You in newness of life; Through the merit and mediation of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Private Confession

Assurance of Pardon

Almighty God, who of His great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto Him, have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sermon Notes

Introduction: What ties this text to the miracles of the loaves and fishes is bread. The Apostles forgot the bread for their travels. They get into a discussion of not having any bread. Yet, Jesus had just miraculously produced bread for thousands! What are they missing? The deeper spiritual lesson of the danger of the leaven of unbelief and evil. The metaphor of “leaven” in the Bible is used for the kingdom of Heaven and its expansion (Matthew 13:33) and for the growth and influence of unbelief and evil (1 Corinthians 5:6 – 8; Galatians 5:9).

  1. Jesus Turns the Focus to a Spiritual Lesson – Verses 14 - 16
  1. The issue that started all this is that the Apostles forgot food for their journey.
  1. Jesus points them to the real danger. Physical bread can be provided for but they need to understand the true issues.
  1. Jesus’ Exasperation and Warning – Verses 17 – 18
  1. The real danger is not running out of food but the insidious way unbelief and evil can destroy you. They are like leaven in bread. Beware!
  1. The believer lives by faith and not by sight.
  1. Jesus Showed Them Who He Was in the Miracles – Verses 19 – 21
  1. Remember the miracles and the surplus of food. You will be fed.
  1. Jesus has been privately instructing them as well as showing them Who He is and they still are worried about worldly concerns.

Conclusion:

  1. It is so easy to be distracted by worldly needs. But we are to be good soldiers who do not get distracted by the world (See 2 Timothy 2:4).
  1. The metaphor of leaven reminds us of the spiritual battles we are in. Our enemies are: the world, the flesh, and the Devil

Welcome

Welcome to Covenant Presbyterian Church. We are a church that is resolved, as the Apostle Paul said, to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. This means we are a community seeking to discover just how amazing the love of God is, as we see it in the Gospel.

We are glad you are here, and we hope that you will find that there is a place for you at CPC as we worship Christ together.

Please introduce yourself to us by filling in a Guest Card, which you should find in the pews in front of you. These cards simply help us to know who you are, and how we can best serve you.
