Give us your views on the draft Renewed Compact

September 2010

Setting the context

The Compact is being renewed to align with the coalition Government’s emerging policy priorities, and to deliver better national and local partnerships. The lack of commitment to the Compact by the previous government reduced its implementation and effectiveness. The withdrawal of the Campaign Research fund in November 2009 provides a prime example of this downfall by the previous government, and how the lack of Compact compliance within government can have an adverse impact on equalities groups. Additionally with the coalition Government’s commitment to devolving powers to a local level, local Compacts will become more important in the future and it is essential that a more effective national Compact forms the foundations for these local Compacts.

We want your views

What the Government has proposed is a much shorter (3 sides) and concise document which will be easier to implement. The renewed Compact will include increased accountability and transparency measures (these are still being discussed in Government and will be outlined before the final text is agreed).

Voice4Change England is seeking your views to feed into our response to Government. We want the final text to reflect the needs of the organisations we work with and support, and also to ensure that race equality is embedded within the implementation of government spending cuts.

The consultation period closes on Monday 29 October 2010. This shorter then usual deadline is to ensure that the Compact is in place and being used by government departments, and local councils, following the October spending review, when cuts are likely to be made and have an adverse effect on BME VCS organisations. It is vital that these are done in a Compact-compliant way.
