England, Wales and Scotland Census Records

England, Wales and Scotland Census Records

Censuses were taken every 10 years from 1801. However, it was not until 1841 that records were made of the names of individuals.

1841 Census (7 June)

These have been indexed by Ancestry.com. A search has shown the following results (ordered by my Family Tree number, where known). The 1841 records (apparently) rounded the ages of adults down to the nearest 5 years (ie 64 became 60) so care needs to be taken with some dates.

Tree # 1 (London)

I couldn’t find any references to this tree in London. This is my family and I suspect that they arrived in London after 1841.

I searched all variants in both Lancashire and London area. I also looked at Floyd and its soundex. The closest was the following (which I don’t think is linked to this tree):

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Surrey / St Marys, Southwark / Patrick Hyde[1] / 1791 / Paviour / Ireland
Mary / 1791 / Ireland
St Marys, Bermondsey / Michael Hyde[2] / 1816 / Tanner / Not stated
William / 1834 / Ireland
Tree # 2 (Wales)

I couldn’t find anything under Hayde or a variant but when searching specific addresses, I found:

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Cardiff / Mary Ann St / Lawrence Head / 1811 / Labourer / Ireland
Ellen / 1816 / Ireland
Mary / 1834 / Cardiff (note that this differs to 1851 and 1861)
John / 1836 / Cardiff
Michael / 1839 / Cardiff
Tree # 6 (From Fethard) (1841)

There was no sign of this family in the UK in this census as they had not arrived by then.

Tree # 7 (From Thurles)
Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Lancaster shire / Oldham Below Town,
Grosvenor St, Hopwood Court / Patrick Hade[3] / 1792 / Umbrella Mk / Ireland
Ellen / 1797 / Ireland
William / 1822 / Ireland
Patrick / 1832 / Lancs
Michael / 1834 / Lancs
John / 1836 / Lancs
Wigan Ashton St / Edward Hade[4] / 1811 / Weaver / Ireland
Hayde in 1861
Mary / 1806 / Ireland
Peter / 1840 / Lancs
Warwick
shire / Court St Leamington Priors / John Hade / 1811 / Labourer / Ireland
Mary / 1811 / Warwick
John / 1838 / Warwick
James / 1840 / Warwick

It is interesting how these three families arrived before the 1840s famine in Ireland. They were either attracted to the area by the factories starting up under the industrial revolution or by the coal mines in the area.

Unknown Tree linkages

All those living in Lancashire and born in Ireland, under Hayde, Heade, Hade[5] were searched.

Place / Name / Born / Occupation / Where born
Lancaster
shire / York St, Hulme, Manchester / Ann Hade / 1816 / Cotton weaver / England, not Lancs
Chadwick St
Manchester / William Hade / 1826 / Printer / Ireland
Manchester / Henry Hade / 1806 / Unreadable / England, not Lancs
Mary / 1805 / Lancs
Henry / 1831 / Lancs
Wigan / Patrick Hide[6] / 1766 / Baker / Ireland
Wigan / Joseph Hide / 1816 / Weaver / Ireland
Elizabeth / 1816 / Ireland

There was also a Hyde family in Manchester but I don’t think it is relevant as they were not Irish born. I have found no trace of William, Henry or Joseph in subsequent census records.

Others are:

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Buckingham shire / Hartwell / James Hade / 1806 / Tailor / Ireland[7]
Eliza / 1807 / Bucks
Sarah / 1830 / Bucks
Andrew / 1831 / Bucks
Anne / 1834 / Bucks
Sharon / 1836 / Bucks
Eliza / 1840 / Bucks

James arrived in the late 1820s. Not sure why he went to Bucks at this time period. Note the occupation, for which there are several Hades in Dublin who were also tailors (later period thou as occupations not known in early 1800s). There was no sign of James after 1841.

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Gloucester / Bitton / Benjamin Hayde / 1801 / Farmer / England, not Gloucs
Ann / 1810 / Glouc
Emily / 1828 / Glouc
Benjamin / 1830 / Glouc
James / 1831 / Glouc
Sarah Ann / 1838 / Glouc
Westbury upon Trym / Edward Hade / 1826 / Pupil at a school / Ireland

Benjamin born 1830 was in Chalford, Gloucestershire in 1891 as Hyde. There was no sign of Edward after this date.

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Middlesex / St Bartholomew / George Hayde / 1819 / Waiter / Middlesex

George was a hotel porter as Hade in St Lukes, London in 1871. He was living by himself.

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born

Wiltshire / Downton / John Hayde / 1796 / Contractor / Wiltshire
Sarah Ann / 1811 / Wiltshire
Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Hampshire / Portsmouth / Margaret Hayde[10] / 1817 / None stated / Ireland
Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born

Mary / 1815 / Ireland
Mary / 1830 / Yorks
John / 1835 / Yorks
Margaret / 1839 / Yorks

There were no obvious signs of these people after 1841.

1851 Census (30 March)

Tree # 1

As my ancestor was born in Westminster in 1848, he must be in this census somewhere. I have however done a comprehensive search of all relevant variants to no avail. I suspect that they were in a Workhouse and either missed being counted or the Workhouse records did not record individuals and just totals.

The people I found were as follows (none of these however are relevant):

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Westminster Middlesex
St Luke / Joseph Hade / 1795 / Tea urn maker
Widowed / Birmingham
St Margarets / Patrick Hyde / 1815 / Labourer / Marylebone
Julia / 1815 / General dealer / Westminster
William / 1841 / Westminster
John Hyde / 1810 / Boot and shoe maker / Manchester
Mary Anne / 1814 / Manchester
Margaret Hyde / 1828 / Ireland, Cork
George C Hyde / 1817 / Surgeon / Middlesex
George Hyde / 1820 / Smith / Lambeth
St Martin / Jane Hayde / 1831 / Kitchen maid / Stratford, Essex
London / Holborn / Edmond Heade / 1826 / Shoe maker / Middlesex, St Georges
Surrey / St Marys Bermondsley / Patrick Hyde[12] / 1791 / Paviour / Limerick, Ireland
Margaret / 1797 / Limerick, Ireland
John / 1823 / Paper maker / Kent, Woolich
Berkshire / City Road
Lambourne / Patrick Head / 1819 / Musician / Dublin
(lodging house) / Margaret / 1822 / Cork, Ireland
Edward / 1845 / Middlesex, London

The Patrick Head (b Dublin 1819) in Lambourne, Berkshire is often quoted as being part of Tree # 1 by some family researchers. The DOB, occupation and first names vaguely fit however in later censuses the family was still in Berkshire as well as the real Tree # 1 family in London. Also, the place of birth for the parents and date of marriage is not correct.

In the 1881 census I found Edward Head, b 1847 Middlesex, who was living in Farnborough, Hampshire and was a private in 56th Regt.

I therefore do not think that this family is related to Tree # 1.

Tree # 2

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Cardiff
St John The Baptist / Lawrence Head / 1812 / Labourer / Ireland
Horse Barracks / Ellen / 1817 / Ireland

James / 1847 / At home / Glamorgan, Cardiff
Ann / 1845 / At home / Glamorgan, Cardiff

Also in Glamorgan in 1851 were 2 Hade entries. One was born in England and the other in Ireland. The Irish birth was a Johanna Hade born 1829 who was lodging in Swansea. Johanna does not appear to be linked to this tree.

Tree # 6

There was no sign of this family in the 1851 census as they were still in Ireland.

Elizabeth / 1850 / Leamington

I checked all of Tonge at FHC but no sign of Mary. There was also no Couper Row in Tonge in this time period. This family may not have arrived until after this census.

In the Channel Islands I found:

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born

@ Hyde in 1861 and 1881

1861 Census (7 April)

Tree # 1

My relations should be in this census but I cannot find them. My great great grandfather, Patrick, and his wife Margaret Farrell, had Edward H (my great grandfather) in Westminster in 1848 (parish or street unknown), Margaret in St Mary’s Westminster in 1849, Patrick in St John’s Westminster (by Westminster Cathedral) in 1853, John in St Luke’s (by the Barbican) in 1855. John died in the Earls Court Workhouse in 1861.

I have also searched the 1861 index looking at variants under Edward, Patrick, John and Margaret. I did not find them. I have assumed that they were in the Earls Court Workhouse in 1861. I have found this census for 1861 but it did not have a breakdown of residents. It showed an Edward Basingshire as master with 517 people in total in residence. This Workhouse was in St Mary’s Abbott parish, Kensington. This Workhouse was also known as Wrights Lane or Marloes Road Workhouse.

I have checked the records of the Kensington Library, the Met Library and the London Library looking for details of the residents of this workhouse. None have been found.

I have not found Johannaand the children in Aldershot at the time of this census. I have searched the Aldershot records for 1861 but did not find them. They were probably in Ireland at this time as a child was born in Killenaule in 1862.

Unknown Tree linkages

There were 246 Hade entries and 37 Heade in total. I only focused on those born in Ireland, apart from London and Lancashire. Unknown entries from London/South East, but I don’t think related are:

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
London
Hackney / Tower Hamlets / Ann Hayde / 1801 / Soldiers wife / South Wales[27]
Bethnal Green / Tower Hamlets / Wm A Hayde / 1828 / Drayman / Wandsworth

Unknown linkages from Lancashire are:

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
Lancashire / Manchester / Joseph Hayde @ / 1821 / Clerk / Salford, Lancs

Tonge, Middleton / Robert Hayde (+ 5 step children) @ / 1821 / Silk weaver / Tonge, Middleton
Mary / 1819 / Silk weaver / Middleton
James / 1860 / Middleton

Robert married Mary Taylor and this is the surname of the 5 step children. They lived in St Leonards, Tonge and appear to not be related to the other family in Tonge.

Kent / Western Heights / Edward Hayde / 1848 / Private 67th regiment / Middlesex, Westminster
Sussex / Hornet St, St Pancras, Chichester / Edward Hayde[29] / 1853 / Musician. Lodger at Inn / Middlesex, Westminster

I searched the records of the Islington Workhouse and have found that Patrick Hyde was actually Patrick Hayde. He was recorded as entering the Workhouse in October 1870 with Ellen Hayde aged 10 years. I could not find her in this 1871 census with Patrick. The closest is the entry in table below.

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
London / St George in the East / Ellen Hade / 1856 / Servant / Pos Middlesex (age prob rounded to 15)

The Islington Workhouse census records also had a John Head, a widower aged 68, bricklayers labourer born Co Galway, Ireland. I have no reason to believe that he was related to Patrick.

Other references in London that I looked at, but I don’t think are relevant, are:

Place / Name / Year born / Occupation / Where born
