WHAT IS VET?

VET stands for Vocational Education Training. SSABSA has a policy called ‘Recognition of VET Outcomes Towards the SACE’. This policy provides students with the opportunity to undertake VET as part of the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). It also acts as a bridge for students between school and gaining further qualifications in the tertiary sector or in work.

HOW CAN VET HELP ME?

Under the policy you can:

  • Explore vocational pathways
  • Acquire industry-specific national competencies from National Training packages
  • Undertake a school-based New Apprenticeship or traineeship within a broad general education.
  • Undertake structured workplace learning.

Yours successful achievement in the national competencies will count towards your SACE.

VET IN THE NEW SACE

Under the policy, VET is able to contribute to the SACE in three ways:

  1. VET can be embedded in SACE subjects such as Workplace Practices.
  2. VET can be recognised as contributing to the SACE in its own rightknown as VET DIRECT.
  3. SACE subjects such as English Pathways, Mathematic Pathways and Engineering Drawing have been introduced to support student VET pathways.

VET PROGRAMS

At HenleyHigh School, VET is offered both within the curriculum and externally from Year 10 level.

We offer a variety of opportunities for students to complete VET competencies and qualifications. Students wishing to complete full VET Certificates are required to complete Structured Workplace Learning which is formal, structured forms of Work Experience where students are assessed against industry-specific competencies and competencies from the national Training Package.

VET IN SACE (cont’d)

HOW DOES VET CONTRIBUTE TO THE SACE IN ITS OWN RIGHT?

VET can be undertaken both within and outside of school through training programs that are based on nationally endorsed training packages. These training packages incorporate national competency standards and are endorsed within the Australian Quality Training Framework. The variety of units of competency offered is tailored to meet individual needs.

HenleyHigh School is able to help you to understand how this process operates and will be able to form links with the appropriate registered training organizations.

If you complete VET independently of your SACE studies, you can be granted status for up to 8 free choice units in the SACE. For every 50 hours of VET that you successfully complete, status for 1 SACE unit will be granted.

To claim status in the SACE, you must provide your school with documents from your registered training organization to show that you have successfully completed the VET you have undertaken. An application for status form is available from the school’s SACE coordinator.

SSABSA will recognise your successful completion of VET within the Australian Quality Training Framework as contributing to your SACE.

VET IN THE NEW SACE

For 2010 VET in the New SACE remains the same as the current SACE.

WHAT ARE SSABSA-VET SUBJECTS?

SSABSA organises VET from nationally endorsed training packages to form particular subjects known as SSABSA-VET subjects. These subjects are approved by the Board of SSABSA and are offered at Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the SACE.

SSABSA-VET subjects give students the opportunity to gain credit in both the SACE and national vocational qualifications within the Australian Quality Training Framework – for example, Certificate III in Fitness. It is possible for students to gain whole qualifications while still at school, as well as gain their SACE.
