Who:This cohort experience in NLGL is designed for educators interested in transforming their teaching and developing advocacy for youth. Participants will critically examine the ways in which adolescent learners are using texts, media, and their language and literacy resources to make sense of and contribute to their communities. We encourage middle and high school classroom teachers, special educators, interventionists, ESL teachers, and administrators to apply.
Why:Middle and high school students engage in complex literacy practices as they navigate social relationships, respond to young adult literature, consume and produce shareable texts/media, and make meaning(s) in their schools, families, communities, and the world. As such, educators should help young people leverage these practices and resources for academic success as they read, write, and shape the world. Our graduate program helps educators learn new instructional approaches that build on adolescents’ existing literacy strengths, and it is especially suited for educators interested in working with communities and youth who have been historically marginalized in educational spaces.
How:In this 30-credit hour Master’s of Education program, courses address important issues and questions in adolescent literacy. Students in this cohort will take:
  • ECI 546 New Literacies and Media
  • ECI 524 Theory and Research in Global Learning
  • ECI 523 Teacher as Researcher
  • ECI 508 Teachers as Leaders
  • ECI 500 Theory and Practice in Teaching Diverse Populations
  • ECI 520 The Teaching of Composition

  • ECI 522 Trends and Issues in ELA Education
  • ECI 582 Adolescent Development
  • ECI 645 Supervised Practicum in Literacy (specialized section for adolescent literacy cohort)
When:The adolescent literacy NLGL cohort begins in Fall. Participants will take two courses per semester (a total of ten courses over five semesters, including one summer session). Courses will be a mix of online, face-to-face, and blended formats.
